From a northern perspective
We are part of the University of Tromsø, the world’s northernmost university and, as such, have the distinct advantage of being able to direct our efforts towards researching the Arctic and northern regions, especially the health-related challenges faced by the population of these regions. Our research tradition dates back to the first ever population census carried out in this region.

Major human diseases
The first main focus of our activity has been mapping the spatial diffusion of, and reasons for the outbreak of, major diseases amongst the population of the Arctic and northern regions. Today, the Department of Community Medicine (ISM) expands that remit to conducting population censuses. More
Focus on the Arctic and northern regions
In addition, we have been developing international collaboration projects from the very beginning, particularly in the Arctic and northern regions. Based on those efforts, northern research forms the second focus of the Department's research. More
The role of the public healthcare system
The Department's third major area of focus is research into public healthcare and general medicine. Under this umbrella, we carry out studies into the economic aspects of healthcare, healthcare errors, the use of intensive care services, health policy and the evaluation of the General Practitioners Scheme. Research into remote and rural medicine also falls under this umbrella. More
