Department of Community Medicine

Community medicine involves studies of the connection between people's health and the wider community. In Tromsø, the research and teaching both reflect our geographic and cultural affiliation in the Arctic region. In addition, there is also particular focus on rural medicine and on a broad epidemiological research activity.

In addition to the subject areas of general practice, epidemiology and medical statistics, preventative medicine, health service research and community psychiatry/medical philosophy, there are several centres attached to the department:

• The National Research Center in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM)
• General Practice Research Units (AFE-Nord )
• The Norwegian Research Network on the use of Coercion in the Mental Health Care System (Netfort) 
• National Information Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NIFAB ) (N)
