Welcome to the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology
Greetings! It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology. Our vision is that all students and employees should be proud of belonging to and working for our department. Our research spans from sea to sky, from individual to ecosystem and from microorganisms to whales and muskoxen. However, our common denominator is that we seek to understand connections within complex biological systems, so that we as a society will be able to prepare and adapt to challenges we may face in the future.
The city of Tromsø, with more than 70.000 inhabitants, is located 69° north of the Equator. Here you may enjoy the beautiful midnight sun in the summertime and the spectacular northern lights, Aurora Borealis during winter. The city of Tromsø and its surroundings provide excellent opportunities for trekking, backcountry skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking, sea kayaking and cross-country skiing with a grand backdrop. In recent winters, pods of whales have migrated to our area following the schools of herring into our fjords. Whether you see them from your kayak or at a safe distance from land, they are fascinating creatures. Our city also has a lively cultural scene, with a large number of festivals, concerts and exhibitions that take place year round. These natural and cultural features combined make Tromsø an amazing city to live in, for students and researchers alike. Here you can read more about our research and study programs. See you in Tromsø!
Sincerely, Dr.Geir Rudolfsen, Head of Department
