Course content

The content of the course will alternate among years. Some years it will be a field course with focus on species identification in different taxonomical groups as well as methods of species collection and conservation for taxonomical research. In other years, it will be a theoretical course focusing on morphological, molecular or statistical methods in biosystematics.

Autumn 2010: The course will be held as a field cours from 2nd to 6th of August


Objectives of the course

To provide a deeper understanding of species, species evolution and species diversity.

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English, Norwegian, Danish or Swedish.

Teaching methods

When organized as a field course, the teaching will be during fieldwork (ca 15h), practical identification of organisms in the laboratory (ca 15h), as well as lectures on the taxonomic groups (ca 6h). When organised as a theoretical course, the lectures (20h) will be supplemented by discussions on recent papers or book chapters and practical computer exercises (20h).

Assessment

Oral exam. Pass/Fail. There will not be arranged a re-sit exam for this course.

Prepare by reading course literature (about 200 pages).
