Spam filtering - Student UiT

The UiT e-mail recipient uses the program SpamAssassin to filter spam. By activating SpamAssassin on your SquirrelMail account at the UiT, you can reduce the amount of spam on your UiT e-mail account.

What is Spam?

Spam is an informal term for unwanted e-mail. The contents of a spam message can be offensive (e.g. pornographic), or it may go against the laws and regulations (e.g. chain letters or solicitation to conduct illegal acts). Spam steals bandwidth in the network and storage space in the e-mail account servers and mail clients.

What can you as an e-mail recipient at UiT do?

By enabling SpamAssassin on your Exchange account via Outlook, you can minimise the number of spam hitting your e-mail account. SpamAssasin goes through all the mail coming in to UiT and inserts one of two lines of text in the header of the email based on whether the program believes the e-mail is spam or not.
