Course contents
Today parts of the health sector appear detached and isolated with little integration (the specialist health service, the first-line service, the nursing and care sector, etc). There is a growing need for closer interaction (financial, organizational and technological) between health authorities, hospitals and the nursing and care sector. This is reflected in the need for increased integration between EHR, different IT systems, technical medical equipment and other telemedicine and e-health services. This involves major challenges to the way that information systems are implemented and used. Organizational factors will represent an important part. Such information systems must have the features of infrastructure technology: used by many people, developed and refined rather than being created from scratch, and with characteristics that change along the way.
Standardization is a condition for integration between different telemedicine and e-health services. Standardization promotes integration of information systems based on different infrastructures, developed with different tools, and which are localized for different areas. We will look at challenges in relation to standardization and we will identify different implementation strategies by studying the establishment of standards and looking at the characteristics of the standards that succeeded.
The public health service's organization, funding and distribution of services are constantly changing and the use of health services is becoming more complex. For example, the use of health services across health regions is encouraged. This is conditional on IT systems that can contribute to cooperation across regions and professions. Telemedicine and e-health services can be used as a means to coordinate and connect the various health services and specialities.
The subject will also address qualitative (interpretative) research methods for studies of people, groups and organizations in relation to the development and use of telemedicine and e-health services.
Objective of the course
The course focuses on organizational aspects relating to the development and use of EHR, telemedicine and e-health services. The main challenge involves gaining a better understanding of the close interaction between technological and social issues around the design, introduction and use of technology. Some specific topics will be integration, standardization, collaboration and distributed work, as well as empirical studies of technology.
Language of instruction and examination
English.
Teaching methods
The course consists of a combination of lectures, discussions, home work and practical exercises. In addition to physical attendance of lectures and seminars, part of the course is net-based, requiring active participation of students via Class Fronter. All assignments are submitted electronically in Class Fronter.
Assessment methods
2-weeks' take-home examination based on a specific assignment.
Date for examination
Hjemmeeksamen:
The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
