Programme description

 The "Technology" stream of this Master's program enables graduates to contribute in:

  • The design, development and implementation of e-health systems and telemedicine applications;
  • The adaptation and maintenance for medical informatics' applications.

The Master's program in Telemedicine and E-health includes theoretical and experimental dimensions and also the application of knowledge to practical projects.

The first year of the program is concentrated on mandatory courses. Students take both computer sciences courses as well as specific Telemedicine courses offered by the Department of Computer Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology.

The Master's Thesis has to be completed by the end of the second year. It may be related to research activities at the Department of Computer Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology or the Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST), as well as other local and international telemedicine environments. The Thesis may be completed at the Department or at a research environment in Norway or abroad.

Learning outcomes

For each programme at the University of Tromsø there are set targets for knowledge, analytical understanding, skills and competences that a student should have reached by the end of studies.

The learning outcomes for "Technology" stream of the program are:

  • Contribute to the design, development and implementation of telemedicine and e-health systems and applications;
  • Contribute to the adaptation and maintenance of telemedicine and e-health systems and applications;
  • Solve advanced problems in telemedicine and e-health experimentally through applying and engineering approach to problem solving;
  • Evaluate the robustness of telemedicine and e-health services and projects.
Admission requirements

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master's program in Telemedicine and E-health requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science. Students must be proficient in core computer science topics and have good programming skills.

Proficiency in English:
Students are expected to fulfill the English entrance requirements for Master's applications stated by the University.

Application Deadlines:
The deadline for Quota applicants and other international self-financing applicants: December 1st.
The deadline for Norwegian and Nordic applicants: April 15th.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching and assessment

Teaching and assessment methods are described in the course plan for each course.

Teaching:
Teaching methods consist of a combination of regular and compact lectures, where students should attend physically on campus, and net-based exercieses and assignments.  

Assessment:
Various assessment forms are used including group presentations, project reports, experimental and laboratorial assignments.
The Norwegian grading system is applied: A-E (pass), with F as fail.

Study abroad can be undertaken during the second year after completing all the obligatory courses.

Access to further studies

On successful completion of the degree programme, students may be qualified for admission to a PhD programme in a number of academic areas at the University of Tromsø or elsewhere.
