The library's lending rules were adopted by the Library Board and apply from August 1, 2009.
The University Library of Tromsø is an institutional library open to the public. Lending rights shall be given to persons above 18 years of age. The rights and obligations apply to the loaning of physical library material and the use of the library's electronic resources and computer equipment.
Use of a library card implies acceptance of the library's rules. All users are obliged to familiarise themselves with these rules. A student identity card doubles as a library card for students, while library cards for staff are issued by a member of the library staff. Holders of national library cards may have these upgraded at the issues desk.
The user's obligations
All documents taken out of the library must be registered as loaned.
The user is personally responsible for all material registered on his/her library card. Users may check documents they have loaned under "My loans" in BIBSYS. The registered loaner of a document is still personally responsible for the document in question if he/she on loans it to another person(s).
Damage or loss of library property may lead to a claim for compensation and restrictions concerning further use of the library, and may also lead to the loss of lending rights.
All users are obliged to notify the library of any change of address, e-mail address, phone number etc. The library shall also be notified of any change of conditions of employment or place on a programme of study. Users with national library cards shall notify one of the libraries where the card is valid of any such changes.
Students are responsible for ensuring their personal details on the student web are correct and up to date.
Loan period and reminder notices
When loaned material is not returned or renewed after two reminder notices, the user will lose the right to loan and reserve library material should a third reminder notice be issued. In order to have the lending rights reinstated, the user must return the overdue material or settle any claim(s) for compensation. In certain circumstances, the library will accept the purchase of replacement copies.
If the document is not returned after a third reminder, a claim for compensation shall be issued. The minimum amount for such claims is currently NOK 500.
The normal lending period for books is four (4) weeks with the option of renewing the loan several times for a total of up to six (6) months. The lending period may be reduced when the book is reserved by another user. In such circumstances, a period of two (2) weeks' notice will be given before the book must be returned.
Parts of the collection are for library use only. Various loan options are indicated in BIBSYS Ask.
Material that is not owned by the University Library of Tromsø may be loaned from other libraries. This service is available only to students and staff of UiT.
For inter-library loans, the lending rules of the library owning the material in question apply. In certain circumstances, material is for library use only at the place indicated.
Special agreements may be entered into regarding the loaning of material from the library as well as inter-library loans.
