Research interests
I am a social anthropologist, who has worked with indigenous communities in Namibia and Botswana since 2008. My research has focused on Indigenous peoples - state relations and on the ways in which Indigenous peoples have responded to and resisted top-down development initiatives, such as land resettlement and education.
Currently, I am part of the research project Indigenous Citizenship and Education. As part of the project, I am researching the educational challenges and opportunities for an indigenous group in east central Namibia, the Ju|'hoansi. In my most recent research, I have discussed the challenges of multicultural education in emerging democracies, and the deficit discourse in education policy and practice in Namibia.
I am also a co-founding member of the Research and Advocacy Group for Hunter Gatherer Education under the International Society for Hunter-Gatherer Research. The group's work is focused on the research and advocacy for (post-)forager communities with respect to formal education and traditional knowledge transmission in the context of rapid social, political and environmental change.
