Job description

I am a microbiologist, with a broad understanding in a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. They cover wet habitats such as fens and bogs in Northern Scandinavia and Northern Siberia, dry cold climates such as the Antarctic continent, dry hot habitats in Chile as well as lakes and ponds in Middle Europe. My work includes the analysis of chemical/physical parameters, the isolation and cultivation of various microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, fungi), the extraction, amplification and quantification of DNA/RNA from cultures and environmental (low biomass) samples as well as the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data using bioinformatics and statistics.

    Research interests

    I am interested in understanding how microbial diversity, community structure and population dynamics are shaped by and linked to their surrounding environmental conditions. Further, I am interested in microbes involved in carbon trace gas cycling, particularly methane producers and consumers. My current research is connected to improving the cultivability of so far unknown microorganisms and the discovery of novel natural products, either by using isolated microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) or by a combination of bioinformatic and molecular tools.
