Rafael Lomeu Gomes

Job description

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and a guest researcher at MultiLing - Center for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan (University of Oslo). My work as a sociolinguist analyses the role of language in social processes that perpetuate or challenge various forms of inequity along axes of gender, race, social class, and nationality in multilingual contexts shaped by immigration.

    Research interests

In my current project, "Linguistic repertoires in transitions: Youth and multilingualism in Northern Norway", I investigate the choices adolescents with transnational background make in relation to what languages to start, continue, or stop studying through the completion of their secondary education, as they transition into tertiary education or into other paths they may choose.

Prior to joining UiT, I held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at MultiLing, University of Oslo (2020-2023), where I examined discourses in Norwegian media on speech styles associated with urban youth with immigrant background and on refugee and asylum-seeking children in Norway (Lomeu Gomes, in press; Lomeu Gomes, Lanza, and Athari, in press; Lomeu Gomes, Opsahl, and Røyneland, forthcoming; Lomeu Gomes and Svendsen 2023).

In my PhD (University of Oslo, 2019), I investigated the interplay between language practices and language ideologies of Brazilian-Norwegian families in Oslo, Norway (Lomeu Gomes, 2018; 2021; 2022a; 2022b. See also Lanza and Lomeu Gomes, 2020; Lomeu Gomes and Lanza, 2022).

As a member of the Global Virtual Forum (Pennsylvania State University, led by Prof. Sinfree Makoni) since 2018, I have contributed to recent efforts towards promoting epistemic justice and decolonising sociolinguistics as a scientific discipline (Makoni et al., 2022). I have served as co-editor of the book series "Global Forum on Southern Epistemologies" (Multilingual Matters).
