Monica I. Norvik

Job description

I am a professor of speech and language therapy. I am trained as a speech and language therapist and special needs educator, and I hold a PhD in clinical linguistics focusing on aphasia and multilingualism. I have over 20 years of clinical experience from the aphasia team at Statped (formerly Bredtvet Resource Center) and currently hold an adjunct professor position at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian studies, UiO. I chair the research group Participation and communication.

My research interests include aphasia and multilingualism, adaptation of tests and methods for clinical practice and research with an emphasis on cross-linguistic perspectives, as well as dementia and neurotypical aging.

I primarily teach in the SLT program, as well as selected courses in special needs education and linguistics. I supervise master’s students in speech and language therapy and special needs education, and PhD candidates in linguistics (University of Oslo).

Research interests

My academic interests encompass speech and language therapy, multilingualism, and clinical linguistics. I primarily work with acquired disorders of language, speech, and communication, with a particular focus on exploring solutions for the assessment and treatment of multilingual individuals. Additionally, I am interested in how the management of multilingual individuals with aphasia and dementia can inform linguistic models of multilingual processing.
