Course content

The subject deals with population dynamics and growth in pelagic and benthic organisms i boreal/polar areas and interactions between organism groups. The course covers methods and regulatory mechanisms for primary production in phytoplankton and ice algae, and secondary production at lower trophic levels, especially zooplankton and benthos. Another theme is population dynamics and models. In addition to lectures, the course consists of article seminars on current research themes, laboratory and computation exercises and, if possible, a cruise.

Objectives of the course

Students that have completed Bio-3504 Production and Growth in Polar Areas:
  •     Know the size distribution of organisms in the ocean in northern/Arctic regions.
  •     Know the differences between biomass and production.
  •     Know the main methods for measuring primary and secondary production.
  •     Have thorough understand the mechanisms that regulate production in the ocean.
  •     Know basic population dynamics and understand the models used therein.
