BIO-3527 Marine Botany II - 10 ECTS

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Applicants from outside the Nordic countries: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Admission requirements

Local admission, application code 9371 - - Master`s level singular course.
Admission requires a Bachelor`s degree (180 ECTS) in biology or equivalent qualification in biology.

Course content

The main themes are:

  • Geophysical growth regime of northern phytoplankton

(hydrophysics, elements and irradiance)

  • Communities and dynamics (species composition, taxonomy,

ice flora, bloom dynamics)

  • Selected themes, e.g. "biological pump", "usefulness of field

research"

  • Extensive written project in scientific format in English

 


Recommended prerequisites

BIO-2502 Marin Biology, BIO-2512 Project Thesis in Aquatic Ecology, BIO-3501 Physical - biological interactions, BIO-3504 Production and Growth in Polar Areas

Objectives of the course

The course deals with important basic (classical) and advanced aspects of high latitude phytoplankton, i.e. the species ofnorthern microalgae communities and characteristics of the environment they thrive in.

Teaching methods

The written project will be tutored in groups and during seminars.

Assessment

Evaluation of written project. Pass/not pass. There will be a re-sit examination for students that did not pass the previous ordinary examination.
