BIO-3525 Evolution and Ecologically Driven Speciation - 10 ECTS

Application deadline

Concerns only admission to singular courses: Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

Master course for biology students - principally aimed at MSc-students specializing in ¿Freshwater Ecology¿. The course is available as a singular course. Will be arranged every second year.

Admission requirements

Local admission , application code 9371 - - Master`s level singular course. Admission requires a Bachelor`s degree (180 ECTS) or equivalent qualification, with a major in biology of minimum 80 ECTS.

Course content

There is growing evidence that in many places new species are emerging at a greater pace, with a higher frequency and in circumstances that more traditional models of evolution would not predict. It is now clear that ecological processes can be a major driver of evolutionary change. Using examples drawn from a wide range of species, we will explore the main elements of our current understanding of the evolutionary processes that gave rise to the diversity of life on earth. Throughout there will be a strong emphasis on recent developments in our knowledge of the ecological consequences of the evolutionary macanisms and particular the role that ecological processes play in promoting evolutionary change.

Objectives of the course

A broad overview of evolutionary processes and mechanisms with a specific focus on ecological consequences and drivers of evolution.

Lectures, seminars and study group

Assessment

Oral examination (in English). The exam will be assessed with a graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail.

There will be a re-sit examination for students that did not pass the previous ordinary examination.
