Compulsory registration for examination
All students must register for examination in courses they follow teaching/receive academic supervision, including Master’s theses, by September 1 in the autumn semester and February 1 in the spring semester. You register for examination via StudentWeb.
Re-scheduled examination/re-sit examination/early examination
Deadline for registering is August 15 and January 15.
Re-scheduled examination (if you were sick on your exam) :
- You need to pay your semester fee before you can register for re-scheduled examination via StudentWeb.
- If you are not continuing your studies but just taking re-scheduled examination, you may register via this form. You submit the form to email@example.com.
Re-sit examination (if you failed your exam):
- You need to pay your semester fee before you can register for re-sit examination via StudentWeb. Ensure you pay your semester fee well before the respective deadlines of August 15 / January 15.
- It is your own responsibility to check that an examination is being held in the course you wish to register for.
Please note that you cannot cancel registration for re-scheduled examination, re-sit examination or early examination.
Application for dispensation from deadlines for examination registration
I - Dispensation from deadlines for examination registration
The deadline for registration for examinations at UiT is 1 February for the spring semester and 1 September for the autumn semester. In exceptional circumstances, you may be granted dispensation from these deadlines on grounds of documented applications.
The legal basis for special circumstances for dispensation from the stipulated deadlines is described in Section 8 of the Regulations for examinations at UiT. Dispensation may be given in the following exceptional circumstances:
1. Sickness on the final day for examination registrations (as documented by a medical certificate).
2. A bereavement in the immediate family (as documented by a civil servant).
3. The first semester an international student is registered at the university.
4. When the student is participating in group work that forms a direct part of the examination in question, and the examination cannot be implemented for the other students in the group without this student being involved.
5. The examination(s) in question will lead to the completion of a degree at the University of Tromsø.
6. In other special circumstances.
II - How to apply for dispensation
If you meet any of the special circumstances mentioned above, you may apply for dispensation from the stipulated deadlines for examination registration. Please use this application form. The application can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. The circumstances cited as the grounds for the dispensation must be documented (as in, for instance, medical certificate).
Applications sent later than four weeks after the registration deadline will not be considered.
Oral exam on Zoom
These instructions are designed to help students prepare for oral examinations implemented via video calls. This guide is based on our recommended tool, Zoom, but it is also possible to implement oral examinations via Teams, Skype for Business and Adobe Connect. Many of the points below will apply regardless of the digital tool used.
Work flow on an oral exam on Zoom:
- Start by
- Check your connection, light and video well before the examination.
- Use https://uit.zoom.us/test to test your connection. We recommend doing this at least two days before the examination, so there is time to receive support or borrow equipment if needed. Please call +47 776 20 880 if you experience problems you are unable to solve yourself.
- If the student advisor or person with academic responsibility has arranged a test examination, this will serve as an adequate test.
- We recommend using a headset to achieve optimal sound quality.
- You must have a camera, which must be turned on during the examination. This enables you to communicate as well as possible and for the examiner to identify you.
- Have valid ID available as you may be asked to show this during the examination.
- Decide where you will sit during the examination. Ensure that...
- There is no noise
- You have a stable internet connection
- You will not be disturbed during the examination
- The lighting conditions are adequate
- You will be sent a meeting link and time for your oral examination by e-mail and/or in Canvas.

During the examination
- The support line during the examination is +47 776 20 880.
- You are NOT permitted to make recordings during the examination.
- Be ready early, at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
- Have valid ID available.
- To join the examination:
- Click on the meeting link or pasting it into your browser
- Open Zoom Meetings
- Select Join with Computer Audio
- You should now enter the virtual the waiting room and wait until you are admitted to the examination by one of the examiners.
- If you experience problems starting the Zoom app, you can join the examination via your browser. We recommend using Chrome or Edge. In this case, click on Join from your browser.
- You will then be asked to enter your name and password. Write your full name. You will find your password on the e-mail containing the meeting link, or in the Canvas room where you found the meeting link.
- The virtual waiting room looks like this:
- You will now have your oral examination. The “room” will look like the photo below. When you enter the meeting, you need to turn on your sound and video by clicking on Unmute and Start Video. If you need to share the screen during the examination, click on Share Screen.
- When the examination is finished, the examiner will move you back to the waiting room. If the examiner will notify you of your grade immediately, you need to wait in the waiting room until the examiner readmits you to the meeting. However, candidates are sometimes notified of their grade later. If you are unsure how you will be notified of your grade, ask the examiners.
- Remember that the “request for an explanation of the awarded grade for an oral examination (...) must be made immediately on notification of the grade. This request shall be directed to the examiner(s)”, cf. Section 45 of the Examination regulations at UiT.
Individual adaptation during an examination
What is individual adaption?
The objective of making individual adaptations during an examination for students with disabilities is to compensate for the disadvantages their disability causes them in an examination situation, while at the same time arranging for all candidates to be tested equally to the greatest extent possible.
Consequently, any adaptation measure granted shall be adequate, but will not always be optimal based on the applicant’s own wishes or assessment of their needs.
Individual adaptation is normally only granted for students with permanent/chronic suffering. Consequently, candidates who experience acute illness are not entitled to individual adaptation. However, if such acute illness arises just before the examination, the candidate has a right to re-scheduled examination.
Individual adaptation during an examination is regulated by Section 28 of the Regulations for examinations at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
How to apply for individual adaptation during an examination
You can apply for individual adaptation if you have special needs during an examination.
The student must submit any application in Word format to the Academic Affairs Section within the deadline for registering for the examination for the relevant adaptation(s). The application must be supported by a recent medical certificate or specialist’s declaration, unless such adaptations are not of a medical nature.

Requirement for documentation
To ensure the practicing of individual adaptation of examinations is as fair and reasonable as possible, UiT The Arctic University of Norway has sent a letter to medical centres/expert bodies outlining the requirements for documentation. Please ensure that your doctor is aware of this letter. Feel free to print a copy of the letter and take it with you.
Deadline to apply for individual adaptation during an examination
The application deadline is 15 February in the spring semester and 15 September in the autumn semester for ordinary examinations.
The application deadline is 15 January and 15 August for re-scheduled and re-sit examinations.
Dispensation from these deadlines is only granted in completely unique cases, and is regulated by Section 8 of the regulations for examinations. Applications for dispensation should be sent as an e-mail to the faculty with responsibility for holding the examination. Applications for dispensation received more than four weeks after the application deadline will not be processed.
Brief details about the most common inconveniences examination candidates experience with examinations:
- Candidates who cannot sit an examination owing to acute suffering are not normally entitled to individual adaptation, cf. Section 30 of the regulations for examinations. Students with acute suffering do not have the right to use a computer.
- Candidates with specific reading, writing and mathematical difficulties may receive the provision of a computer with a spell checker to sit the written examination, cf. Section 31 of the regulations for examinations. Documentation from the candidate’s therapist is required. For electronic examinations using the Flowlock web browser, this will normally involve spell checking via the web browser. If you have any questions related to this, please contact the student administration at your faculty.
- Candidates suffering from allergies or asthma are not given individual adaptation of examination, cf. Section 32 of the regulations for examinations. In serious or special cases, candidates may be given additional time to rest and/or take necessary medication.
- Pregnant candidates are given an additional 20 minutes to rest during written examinations of up to three hours’ duration, 30 minutes for examinations of three to five hours’ duration and one hour for written examinations lasting five hours or more, if the examination is held in the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy, cf. Section 33 of the regulations for examinations. Documentation of the baby’s anticipated due date is required.
Candidates for whom Norwegian is a foreign language receive additional examination time, cf. Section 34 of the regulations for examinations. This arrangement does not apply for students on English-taught programmes or students who had Norwegian as their second language at upper secondary school. Moreover, it does not apply to candidates taking courses in Nordic languages.
For supervised written examinations, you will receive your candidate number during the examination. Remember to bring valid ID.
For home examinations, you can find your candidate number in the left-hand menu of StudentWeb under “Exam registration”.
When your examination paper is handed in in WISEflow, home exam or written exam, your candidate number is by default and automatically bound to your paper.
Cancel registration of examination
The deadline for withdrawing from examination or changing the date of examination is:
- April 15 in the spring semester
- November 1 in the autumn semester
NB: For ordinary examinations with the examination date before April 29, you need to withdraw no later than 14 days before the examination date.
You cancel your registration for examination via StudentWeb.
NB: Students who do not withdraw from examination and do not attend the examination are regarded as having attempted the examination.
NB: It is not possible to cancel registration for re-scheduled examination, re-sit examination or early examination.
The information on this page is very important. To make sure that you do not encounter any difficulties on the day of the exam, you should read the information below carefully.
1. Username and password
You log in to WISEflow using your regular UiT username and password (login through Feide).
If you have not activated your IT-account, or you have forgotten your username and password, go to https://passord.uit.no. If you should have any problems using the password services, please contact Orakelet: Tel. 776 44544 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Once your username and password are in order, please log in to WISEflow on your own computer. If you should have any trouble, contact Orakelet.
2. How does a WISEflow exam work?
You can watch a short video about WISEflow here. If you are taking an electronic on-campus exam, you also need to test the FLOWlock browser.
The FLOWlock browser is a secure browser that prevents you from accessing other webpages or local files on your computer. It also blocks communication through e-mail or chat. Read more under point 3.
Some written exams allow access to computer files, web pages or applications. The FLOWlock browser is not in use during these exams. You still hand in your answer paper in WISEflow.
3. Installing FLOWlock browser and testing computer/mac
Once you have downloaded the FLOWlock browser, we strongly suggest that you to bring your computer to campus, log on to the Eduroam access service, and run the test version of the FLOWlock browser.
How to test the FLOWlock browser:
- Close all other applications except the web browser
- Log in at https://uit.wiseflow.dk
- On the main page "Flow overview", click on "Demoflows"
- Try out demo for the kind of exam you are going to have
4. The day of the exam
Please meet at the assigned room no later than 30 minutes before the exam starts.
Remember to bring your own computer/mac, and charger. You also need to bring valid ID (driver’s licence, passport).
Please follow the instructions given by the invigilators.
Set up your computer and log in immediately upon arrival in the examination room – you have to be logged in no later than 15 minutes before the exam starts. It is imperative that you have downloaded and tested the FLOWlock browser before the exam!
The three times rule
You may only attempt the same examination three times. If special circumstances exist, the relevant faculty may make an exception from this rule. This rule is regulated by Section 25 of the regulations for examinations.
You will find the time and venue for your written examinations by logging in to the Studentweb. The examination venue will be published in the Studentweb no later than two weeks before your examination. You will also find a link to a map to the venue.

Chapter I Scope and terminology
Section 1. Scope of regulations
These regulations cover students' rights and obligations in connection with taking examinations at the University of Tromsø. These regulations also apply to the instruction component of Doctoral degree programmes, where relevant. Students are obliged to familiarise themselves with the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges, the Regulations for examinations at the University of Tromsø and other rules and regulations relating to examinations.
For studies with set national curriculums containing stipulations about examinations that deviate from these regulations, the stipulation(s) in the national curriculum prevail.
These regulations also apply, where relevant, to external candidates unless otherwise specified in the programme of study/course description.
Section 2. Supplementary regulations
The faculties may adopt supplementary provisions in accordance with these regulations for conditions relating to specific examinations. Such supplementary rules shall not lead to limitations on the student's rights and obligations as described in these regulations. For educational provisions offered in collaboration between two or more faculties, any supplementary regulations must be approved by all of the faculties concerned. The University Director shall be notified as soon as practicably possible of the adoption of such supplementary provisions or amendments to supplementary provisions which are already in effect.
Section 3. Terminology
||The term coursework requirements refers to all forms of work and testing as outlined in the conditions for sitting the examination, but where the result does not form part of the basis for calculation of the character stated on the diploma. The assessment term for work requirements shall be approved/not approved.|
|Module examination:||A module examination is an examination that forms part of the calculation of the final grade.|
|Diploma supplement:||Supplement to the diploma in English and/or Norwegian which provides information about the Norwegian system of higher education, and about the individual student's education.|
||A test of the student's knowledge and skills, which results in a grade stated on the diploma or which forms part of the basis of calculation for a grade stated on the diploma.|
||An examination which a faculty may hold in special circumstances for students that cannot wait until the next ordinary examination, and who do not meet the requirements to participate in a re-scheduled or re-sit examination (with reference to section 23).|
|Faculty||Unit with responsibility for exams at the faculty level|
|Course:||The smallest component of a subject/discipline or programme of study.|
|Course description:||A description of the learning outcomes, academic components, structure and implementation of the course. All courses at the University of Tromsø are described in a course description.|
||A collection of courses from one or more subjects/disciplines, which is defined in an individual education plan as constituting a combined academic unit.|
A collection of courses that are related, and which are grouped under a joint subject designation.
A plan that specifies the academic content in programmes that are regulated by national curriculums.
|Degree:||Education of a certain level and composition which entitles the student to a diploma from the University of Tromsø.|
|Home examination:||An examination in which the students have a stipulated time to answer a given or optional issue individually or in groups, and where all examination supports are permitted.|
|Individual adaptions during an examination:||The function of individual adaptions during an examination is to compensate for the disadvantages that the disability causes the student in the exam situation, but without lowering the academic requirements of the relevant course or study programme.|
|Re-sit examination:||An examination which can be arranged for students who sat the last ordinary examination and received the result "fail" (with reference to section 21).|
||The term external candidate refers to a person who does not have the right to study the programme/course at the University of Tromsø, but has permission to sit the examination in accordance with the stipulations in sub-section 3-10, number 1, of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges.|
|National curriculum:||A national plan adopted by the Ministry. The plan outlines the learning outcomes, academic content, structure and implementation of vocational training programmes.|
||A piece of written work within specified guidelines which comprises part of the Master's degree examination and which should show independent understanding, reflection and maturity.|
|External examiners' guide:
||Written description of the academic basis for the assessment of the exam. The external examiners' guide should specify which elements should be discussed in the examination answers, and which elements should be given particular emphasis in the assessment, based on the syllabus and the description of learning outcomes and learning activities for the course.|
|Written examination:||A supervised written examination.|
||The term student refers to people admitted to a discipline or academic studies at the University of Tromsø in accordance with the sub-sections 3-6 and 3-7 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges|
|Credits (ECTS):||A measurement of the quantity of work completed. Sixty (60) credits constitute one year's full-time study.|
|Programme of study:||An overall programme of several years' duration culminating in a degree or vocational training.|
|Re-scheduled examination:||An examination arranged for students who have been sick or had another reason for being absent from the last ordinary examination (with reference to section 21).|
Chapter II Registration and registration for examination
Section 4. Reading lists
Reading lists shall be provided for each course. Updated reading lists for each course shall be available at the start of each teaching semester. In the event that the organised part of the teaching, for example lectures, laboratory work and seminars, shall form part of the compulsory reading list and examination papers must be based on this, this will be apparent on the reading list.
In courses in art subjects, the syllabus may be stated in dimension/duration or the number of works without further specification.
Section 5. Registration and registration for examination
The student must pay the semester fee, register as a student and register for examination for courses, field courses or excursions that yield credits, within the prevailing deadlines. The deadlines are published on the university's website.
It is the individual student's own responsibility to correct or report any errors or omissions during registration for examination on the student web, and to update his/her residential address and e-mail address.
Section 6. Cancellation of registration for examination or alteration of examination semester
The Director of Academic Affairs stipulates the deadline for cancellation or alteration of registration for examination. The deadline is announced on the university's website. For examinations that are implemented before this date, the deadline for cancellation of a registration for examination or to alter the examination semester is 14 days before the date of the examination or submission deadline for module examinations.
Registration for examination for re-scheduled examinations, re-sit examinations and early examination in non-teaching semesters may not be cancelled. This also applies for compulsory supervised practical studies, periods of supervised professional training, practical works, laboratory experiments or similar that last continuously for a period of more than two weeks.
Section 7. External candidates
A person who is not admitted as a student has the right to register for an examination in a course in accordance with sub-section 3-10, number 1, of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. The faculties determine whether the conditions for registration for the examination have been met, and may stipulate more detailed rules and regulations pertaining to sitting an examination without being admitted as a student. The faculties also determine to what extent knowledge and skills shall be tested in a different way to students who are admitted to the course, in accordance with sub-section 3-11, number 3, of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. The right of external candidates is limited to participating in public lectures and sitting the examination.
The University Director shall stipulate special registration deadlines for such examinations, and can also stipulate that people not admitted as students for the course must pay a fee to cover the university's expenses.
Section 8. Dispensation from deadlines for registration, examination registration and applications for special adaptations for an examination
The University Director may, following an application from a student, grant dispensation from the stipulated deadlines for registration and registration for examination registration.
The faculties may, following an application from a student, grant dispensation from the stipulated deadlines for individual adaptations for an examination.
Dispensation under the first and second paragraph may be given in the following cases:
1. Sickness on the final day for registrations (documented by a medical certificate).
2. A bereavement in the immediate family (documented by a civil servant).
3. The first semester an international student is registered at the university.
4. When the student is participating in group work that forms a direct part of the examination in question, and the examination can not be implemented for the other students in the group without this student being involved.
5. The examination(s) in question will lead to the completion of a degree at the University of Tromsø.
6. In other special circumstances.
Applications sent later than four weeks after the registration deadline will not be considered.
Chapter III Examination implementation
Section 9. Conditions for sitting examinations
In order to sit an examination, the student must complete and gain approval for any coursework requirements, and have passed any examinations or periods of supervised professional training as stipulated in the course description. The faculty may grant dispensation from these requirements in special circumstances, e.g. when the student has the equivalent documented from another learning institution.
Section 10. Examination arrangements
The student's knowledge and skills shall be tested in each course.
An examination can cover one or more parts, and can comprise one or more different examination forms. The examination arrangements shall be stipulated in the course description. The oral parts of examinations shall be public unless regard for the examination arrangements indicates otherwise. The same applies to examination in performing arts, practical and aesthetic courses. The board may make exceptions to the rule concerning public examinations in particular cases at the request of the examination candidate concerned when particularly weighty reasons so indicate.
For examination forms of several days' duration, statutory holidays and other public holidays are not counted as part of the examination period.
Section 11. Language for examinations
The faculty determines which language shall be utilised in the examination papers and answers during the examination. Details about the language of instruction and examination shall be included in the course description for the relevant course.
The faculty shall rule on any applications for the examination papers to be made available, and answered, in a language other than stipulated in the course description.
The faculty shall ensure that examination papers given in Norwegian are available in both Bokmål and Nynorsk. In the event that all students have selected the same preferred language form, the assignments can be written in that form only. Students select their preferred language form when registering for the examination.
Section 12. Times and venues
Exams are normally held on the university premises.
The relevant faculty is responsible for stipulating the venue, date and time of all oral examinations and examinations in artistic, practical or aesthetic courses, as well as for the submission of written assignments.
The relevant faculty, in consultation with the Director of Academic Affairs, stipulates the venue, date and time for all written examinations at the university.
Exam dates are announced on the university's website. Examination dates are not final until they are announced.
Stipulated examination dates are not normally altered. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they do not register for more than one examination at the same time.
For organised decentralised teaching, the person with academic responsibility may, upon application, authorise the holding of decentralised examinations. The question of decentralised examination shall be clarified before the educational provision is commenced.
Section 13. Printing/copying of Master's theses and candidate assignments
The faculties are obliged to print up to 10 examples of written Master theses, semester assignments and similar free of charge for their own students.
Section 14. Accessibility of Master's theses or the equivalent in the university's research archive
Master's theses or the equivalent, which are not exempt from publicity in accordance with Section 15, shall be openly accessible in the university's digital research archive.
Individual students reserve the right to refuse such accessibility.
Section 15. Exemption from being made publicly available
The starting point is that all Master's theses/assignments or similar are public.
Theses/assignments containing information subject to statutory non-disclosure of confidential information shall be exempted from being made public.
If sound reasons exist, the faculties may also agree to the thesis/assignment being exempted from being made public for up to five years. In special circumstances, the thesis/assignment may gain an exemption for a longer period.
Section 16. Withdrawal from examinations
A student who does not present himself/herself for an examination, submit a module examination within the stipulated deadline or who withdraws after the deadline for cancellation of the registration for examination has passed is regarded as having presented himself/herself for the examination. A candidate who presents himself/herself for an examination, but who withdraws during the examination, is also regarded as having presented himself/herself for the examination.
Any candidate who presents himself/herself for a written examination but chooses not to submit his/her paper(s) must complete and submit a withdrawal form before leaving the examination venue. For other types of examinations with deadlines for submitting answer papers, withdrawal forms must also be submitted before the deadline passes.
Any candidate who submits a blank answer paper, or a paper which clearly does not constitute an academic attempt, is also regarded as having withdrawn from the examination.
Once a candidate has submitted his/her answer paper, he/she may not avoid having their paper assessed.
Section 17. Acute sickness and other special reasons for absence from examinations
In instances of acute sickness, the student is given the right to sit a re-scheduled examination (with reference to section 21). The term acute sickness refers to sickness which has arisen after the deadline for the cancellation of registration examination (with reference to section 16). Bereavements in the immediate and other special circumstances can also provide basis for sitting a re-scheduled examination, in the event that such circumstances can be documented.
In the event a candidate cannot present himself/herself for an examination because of acute sickness or other special circumstances, the candidate has the right to sit a re-scheduled examination (with reference to section 21) providing a medical certificate/documentation is sent/delivered to the faculty no later than 48 hours after the first examination for which the medical certificate/documentation applies. A candidate who becomes sick during a written examination must complete a withdrawal form, seek medical attention and submit a medical certificate no later than two days. If it is not possible to attain a medical certificate within 48 hours of the first examination for which the medical certificate relates, the examination candidate must notify the faculty within the stipulated deadline.
For home examinations and similar examination forms of several days' duration, in special circumstances additional examination days may be granted if the candidate documents unforeseen problems of a medical nature, bereavement in the immediate family or other similar misfortunate circumstances that have occurred during the examination period. When the stipulated examination time is more than two weeks, the submission deadline may be extended by up to two days. If the stipulated examination time in of a shorter duration, the submission deadline may be extended by one day. Students who still do not manage to complete the examination in spite of the extra time have the right to a re-scheduled examination in accordance with Section 21.
The medical certificate shall contain details of which examination(s) it applies for, together with the duration of the period of sickness. A medical certificate designed for an employer will not be accepted as satisfactory medical documentation.
Section 18. Absence during a group examination
A candidate who is participating in a group examination and is absent in accordance with Section 17 shall be regarded as not having participated in the examination. If the group originally comprised up to four people, a new submission deadline or examination time will be determined for the remaining group members. If the group comprised five or more people, the group examination will be implemented for the remaining group members in accordance with the stipulated rules concerning scope, submission deadline and examination time.
If doubt arises about whether an examination candidate is contributing or has contributed sufficiently to receive credits for a joint product where a joint grade is awarded for the entire group, separate grades can be awarded for each group member. The faculty may, in special circumstances, reach a decision that the candidate who has not contributed adequately shall be regarded as having withdrawn during the examination.
If the group work becomes significantly different than anticipated because of conditions outlined in the first and second paragraphs, the lecturer or each of the candidates request that a new examination question paper be set. If agreement is not reached, a final decision on the matter is made by the Faculty's Dean. If the group is not given a new examination question paper, it may be determined that the group is given a reasonable extension to the deadline to complete the assignment.
However, when special reasons exist, the stipulations in the third paragraph can be applied accordingly. If more than one candidate in a group becomes absent or withdraws, an assessment will be made on a case by case basis about whether the remainder of the group shall complete the examination. Consideration must be given to the contributions or expected contributions of the absent members and the remaining members' possibilities for completing the examination. The stipulations in the third paragraph then apply accordingly.
In the case of absence in a performance/practical examination, a new examination time will be determined.
Section 19. Permitted examination supports during examinations
Permitted examination supports shall be specified on the examination's cover paper. The relevant faculty is responsible for the approval and control of such examination supports.
Students are not permitted to take mobile telephones and other communication devices into the examination venue.
Section 20. Cheating
Examples of actions which are counted as cheating or as an attempt to cheat are:
- to use unauthorised supports during the exam
- to present the work of other people as one's own work
- to cite sources or in other ways to use sources in one's written work without referencing those sources properly
- to submit an examination answer which has previously been submitted as an examination answer at the University of Tromsø or any other institution of higher education
- to engage in unauthorized communication with other students during the examination
- to act in conflict with the examination regulations or in any other unlawful way which may give one advantages at the exam
Cheating and attempts to cheat during coursework requirements which involve some elements of assessment (by university staff) are regulated by the same rules as cheating at the exam.
The rules regulation cheating at exams apply so far as applicable (and with necessary modifications) for exams in the instruction component og the PhD programmes.
Under the Act relating to the Universities and University Colleges, candidates who have, out og gross negligence or with intent, cheated or attempted to cheat during an examination may have the examination annulled. They may also be excluded from the university or lose the right to sit exams at all Norwegian universities and university colleges for a period of up to one year.
The annulment of exams as the result of cheating or an attempt to cheat, counts as an exam attempt.
Chapter IV Postponed, re-sit and extraordinary examinations etc.
Section 21. Postponed examinations resulting from acute sickness or other special reasons for absence
Candidates who do not complete an examination in full or part and who meet the criteria detailed in Section 17 may sit a re-scheduled examination.
Candidates who owing to specific reasons in connection with pregnancy, giving birth or caring for a child cannot sit an ordinary examination may also apply to sit a re-scheduled examination. Such circumstances must be documented by a medical certificate, birth certificate or similar.
During a re-scheduled examination, students cannot re-sit parts of the examination they sat during the ordinary examination. Examination arrangements for re-scheduled examinations shall be the same as those for ordinary examinations.
Re-scheduled examinations shall be arranged as soon as practicably possible after the reasons for absence have ceased, and normally no later than two months after a new semester has commenced. It is the student's own responsibility to register for a re-scheduled examination. Deadlines for registering for re-scheduled examinations are stipulated by the Director of Academic Affairs. Registrations for re-scheduled examinations are binding.
Students must confirm arrangements for re-scheduled examinations, including for module examinations comprising several parts, with the relevant faculty.
If the re-scheduled examination shall take place in a new semester, the student must complete a seperate form for registration for re-scheduled examination and submit it to the relevant faculty.
In the event that a student does not present himself/herself for a re-scheduled examination or withdraws during the examination, the student may not sit a new re-scheduled examination.
Students who fail a re-scheduled examination do not have the right to re-sit the examination.
Section 22. Access to re-sit examinations
Students who do not pass the previous ordinary examination, and who have the right to study the programme of study or course in question, can gain access to a re-sit examination in the event that the faculty has determined that re-sit examinations will be available for the course in question. Candidates considered to have withdrawn from the examination in accordance with Section 16 do not have the right to a re-sit examination. Stipulations about access to re-sit examinations, including grade-generating activities which must be re sat if a student has failed a course, shall be covered in the course description for each course.
Re-sit examinations are normally held at the start of the semester following the ordinary examination in question.
It is the student's responsibility to register for re-sit examinations. Deadlines for registering for re-sit examinations are stipulated by the Director of Academic Affairs. Registrations for re-sit examinations are binding.
Re-scheduled examinations are not held for absence from re-sit examinations resulting from sickness or other reasons.
Students do not have the option of sitting a re-sit examination to improve their grade in an examination they have already passed.
In the event that independent work for postgraduate degrees, or other written works of similar dimension, are assessed as "failed", such works can be resubmitted for assessment in a reworked or supplemented form.
Section 23. Access to extraordinary examinations
An extraordinary examination is an examination a faculty can hold in special circumstances for students who cannot wait until the next ordinary examination, and who do not meet the requirements to participate in a postponed or re-sit examination.
Applications must be sent to the faculty with academic responsibility for the course in question.
No re-scheduled or re-sit examinations are arranged subsequent to an extraordinary examination.
Students who sat the ordinary examination in the same course on the last occasion it was held, and examination candidates who are not admitted for the programme of study or course in question, cannot sit extraordinary examinations.
Section 24. Access to sit examinations in accordance with previous arrangements in the event of termination or alterations to a course
In the event that a course undergoes significant alterations with respect to dimension, reading list or similar, students will have the option to sit the examination on one occasion in accordance with the previous arrangements within a period of one year of the changes taking effect. However, the student cannot claim teaching in accordance with the previous arrangements. In the event that the changes concern the examination arrangements, the student has the opportunity to sit the examination on one occasion in accordance with the previous arrangements if he/she has begun the course prior to the new arrangements coming into effect.
Examination candidates who are not admitted as students for the programme of study or course in question must sit the examination in accordance with the prevailing examination arrangements for external candidates.
Students must apply to sit an examination in accordance with previous arrangements. Such applications shall be sent to the faculty with academic responsibility for the course in question.
Section 25. Access to sit the same examination
A student may present himself/herself for the same examination at the University of Tromsø up to three times. What constitutes presenting oneself for an examination is described in Section 16.
The relevant faculty may grant dispensation from this rule in the event that one of the following criteria is met:
1. By passing the examination, the student will complete a degree or vocational training at the University of Tromsø
2. The student can document social and/or personal reasons why he/she has not passed the examination despite sitting it three times
Dispensation may be granted on up to three occasions.
The faculty make revoke the right to study for a student who has presented himself/herself for the same examination at the University of Tromsø on three or more occasions.
In the event that a student has passed the same examination on more than one occasion, the best grade will apply.
Candidates who have passed an examination in a course which includes several parts must re-sit all parts.
Section 26. Access to take a new period of supervised professional training
If a student fails supervised practical studies or a period of supervised professional training, the student can repeat the supervised practical studies or period of supervised professional training one time.
A student whose second attempt is evaluated as "failed" can lose the right to study. The student shall receive notification of this in writing before commencing the second attempt. In the event that the national curriculum allows for further examination attempts, the stipulations of the national curriculum prevail.
The relevant faculty may grant dispensation from this rule in the event that one of the following criteria is met:
1. By passing the supervised practical studies or a period of supervised professional training, the student will complete a degree or vocational training at the University of Tromsø.
2. The student can document social or personal reasons why he/she has not passed the supervised practical studies or a period of supervised professional training despite two attempts.
These dispensation opportunities do not pertain to supervised professional training included in teacher education programmes, unless otherwise stated in the national curriculum for each individual study programme.
Section 27. Notice in connection with risk of not passing a period of supervised professional training
If in the course of periods of supervised professional training or similar it appears the student is at risk of not passing, the faculty shall notify the student of this. The notice shall make the student aware of what is required of him/her in order to be assessed as "passed".
The notice shall be in writing and at a time that gives the student an opportunity to fulfil the targets and pass the period of supervised professional training. The student shall be given the opportunity to comment on the conditions on which the assessment is based before a decision is made to assess the student as "fail".
If after the time of notice conditions occur of a nature that without doubt would have led to a failed period of supervised professional training if this had occurred earlier, this can still lead to the period of supervised professional training not being passed. This applies also if prior notice is not given.
The Faculty of Law may depart from the stipulations in this section in supplementary regulations for the Master of Jurisprudence.
Chapter V Individual adaptations during an examination
Section 28. Individual adaptations during an examination
The objective of making individual adaptations during an examination for students with disabilities is so that any disadvantages the disability causes can be rectified to the greatest extent possible so all candidates can be tested equally. The examination form shall form the basis of assessing which remedies/measures can compensate for the disability. Adaptations shall not lead to a reduction of the academic requirements that apply for the relevant course.
Any applications for adaptations must be submitted to the faculty which is responsible for the study programme within the deadline for registering for the examination (with reference to Section 5). The faculty can grant dispensation from this deadline (with reference to Section 8). Applications must include a recent medical certificate or specialist's declaration unless such adaptations are not medically related. Such applications must specify which difficulties the student will encounter with the examination form for which they are applying for adaptations.
Section 29. Physical and psychological disabilities of a long lasting or permanent nature
Special adaptations for examinations can be arranged to the extent possible for students with documented physical and/or psychological disabilities. A medical certificate or specialist's report is required. Individual arrangements can include the provision of additional time to complete the examination, the provision of an adjustable chair, the use of one's own special chair, the use of a computer, the use of an electric keyboard, a separate rom or similar. If it is documented that the disability is of long lasting nature, special arrangements for written examinations can be registered preventing the need to submit a separate application each examination semester.
However, for other types of examinations than written school exams and examinations consisting of several different examination forms, it is necessary to reapply each examination semester. In the event that the disability is of long lasting nature, medical documentation is not required with subsequent applications.
With respect to home examination or similar examination forms, the faculty must undertake an individual assessment of the length of an eventual extended examination time. The number of additional days granted may not be such that the assignment cannot be examined together with those submitted within the deadline. For semester assignments and other written works on which students may work throughout the whole semester, the relevant faculty must assess how many, if any, constitute a reasonable number of extra examination days.
Section 30. Acute suffering/temporary disabilities
Candidates who as a result of acute suffering just prior to the examination cannot participate in or complete an examination have has the right to re-scheduled examination in accordance with the stipulations in Section 21. However, if it is probable that the candidate with acute suffering will be able to sit/complete the examination with simple and low resource-draining measures, such minor individual adaptations will be granted.
Section 31. Specific literacy and mathematical problems
Students with documented literacy or mathematical problems can receive an additional examination time of 20 minutes for written examinations of up to three hours' duration, 30 minutes for examinations of three to five hours' duration and one hour for written examinations lasting five hours or more. There is also the option of utilising a computer with a spell checker to sit the examination. Other remedies may also be assessed. The candidate may, upon request to the faculty, request anonymous copies of their therapist's certificate to attach to their answer papers. Candidates may not use spell checkers for examinations in Norwegian or English in teacher education programmes. Additional time is not normally provided for take-home assignments and similar examination forms of several days' duration.
Unclear handwriting does not form the basis for special adaptations of examination.
Section 32. Allergies and/or asthma
Allergies and/or asthma do not provide the basis for individualadaptations during examinations. In serious/special circumstances, a shorter amount of additional time can be provided during written examinations to rest and/or receive necessary medication. In the event that the candidate is suffering from an allergy/asthma to the extent that he/she is unable to sit/complete the examination, he/she can sit a re-scheduled examination in accordance with Section 21.
Section 33. Pregnancy or breast feeding
Pregnant candidates receive resting time of 20 minutes for written examinations of up to three hours' duration, 30 minutes for examinations of three to five hours' duration and one hour of written examinations lasting five hours or more in the event that the examination is held in the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy. A medical certificate stating the baby's anticipated due date must be provided. In the event that a pregnant candidate requires resting time during an examination earlier in the pregnancy, a special application must be submitted containing a medical certificate documenting such requirements. In the event of pregnancy and birth, candidate may submit an application to sit written examinations at home or in hospital. In such circumstances, the candidate must receive prior written consent from the hospital.
Candidates who wish to breast feed their baby during a written examination can receive additional time equivalent to the time spent breast feeding. Such circumstances do not require written documentation. However, an application must be submitted within the stipulated deadline in the normal manner.
Section 34. Norwegian as a foreign language
Candidates who have Norwegian as a foreign language receive an additional examination time of 20 minutes for written examinations of up to three hours' duration, 30 minutes for examinations of three to five hours' duration and one hour of written examinations lasting five hours or more. With respect to take-home assignments and similar examination forms of several days' duration, the faculty shall assess whether there is basis for additional time.
Such arrangements apply only during the first year in which the student is registered at the University of Tromsø. Such arrangements do not apply for students who shall sit the examination in English or for students who had Norwegian as their second language at upper secondary school. These arrangements do not apply to candidates taking courses in Nordic languages.
Candidates who have Norwegian as a foreign language may, upon application to the faculty, use a dictionary in the examination.
Chapter VI Assessment terms and determining of grades
Section 35. Determining of grades
The method for determining grades, including the weighting of parts, shall be stipulated in the course description and/or curriculum or programme description.
The independent work in postgraduate degrees shall always receive a separate grade.
Section 36. Assessment terms
The following assessment terms shall be used:
a) pass/fail or
b) a graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail
The above-mentioned letter grades (from A-F) have the following designations and general qualitative descriptions:

||A performance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria. The candidate demonstrates an absence of both judgement and independent thinking.|
The grade scale pass/fail shall be an independent assessment term not connected with the graded scale from A-F.
Section 37. Average grade
If a need arises to calculate an average grade in a course groups or study programmes, the grades (from A-E) must be utilised for all courses to be included in the calculation.
The following method of calculation shall be utilised:
1. Each letter is replaced by its numerical equivalent: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1
2. The numerical equivalent shall be multiplied by the course's total number of credits, and the products of the credits and numerical equivalents are summarised for the comprising courses
3. The product is divided by the total number of credits the courses represent
4. The quotient is calculated to one decimal point
5. The average grade is the letter with the numerical equivalent of the whole number of the quotient after conventional rounding
In order to calculate average grades, the candidate must have passed all grade-generating activities.
Chapter VII Assessment
Section 38. Assessment guidelines
Assessment guidelines shall be compiled for every examination.
Section 39. The number of examiners, assessment arrangements and the utilisation of external examiners
The faculties are responsible for the appointment of examiners. The assessment or assessment arrangements shall undergo external evaluation. The following assessment arrangements apply at the University of Tromsø:
1. Two examiners shall be utilised, at least one of which must be external, in the following circumstances:
a. for the evaluation of a candidate's independent work for postgraduate degrees.
b. for reassessments as a result of procedural errors in connection with the examination in accordance with sub-section 5-3 no. 2 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges.
c. for complaints about the determining of a grade sub-section 5-3 no. 4 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges.
2. In all other circumstances, one of the following solutions must be used:
a. an external examiner possibly in combination with an internal examiner.
b. a minimum of on internal examiner in combination with external evaluation of the assessment or assessment arrangements.
For assessment of oral examinations, examinations in artistic, practical or aesthetic courses or similar, which owing to their nature cannot be reviewed, there shall be a minimum of two examiners.
The arrangements for the external evaluation can be one or more of the following:
a. external participation in the preparation of the examination papers and assessment guidelines.
b. external control of the internal examiners' assessment of a number of candidates selected at random.
c. external assessment of all assessment arrangements included in a curriculum/programme description.
When two examiners shall jointly determine a grade for a written examination, and the examiners do not reach agreement on a joint grade, a third examiner, who shall be external, shall be called in. The grade is determined through joint agreement or by two of the examiners' viewpoints being decisive.
The faculties determine the general guidelines, or for the specific programme of study or course, concerning the number of examiners and how the external participation in the assessment shall be carried out, either with external participation in the specific assessment or external assessment of the assessment arrangements.
Section 40. Assessment of final Master's examination
The candidate's academic supervisor shall not be an examiner, but the Faculty Board may in special circumstances make an exception to this rule. The examination commission may confer with the academic supervisor prior to the assessment meeting. The academic supervisor shall not participate in the assessment meeting and not participate in determining the grade. If deemed necessary, the examination commission may request that the academic supervision submit a written explanation of the academic supervision process.
Section 41. External examiners and qualification requirements
External examiners shall not be employed on a part-time or full-time basis at the University of Tromsø during the semester in question. Lecturers and the holders of seminars with engagements are counted as internal during the period in which they receive payment from the university. The faculties may make an exception to this in instances of short-term engagements affiliated with another programme of study.
An external examiner must hold qualifications relevant for employment as (minimum) university college lecturer/Assistant Professor at a university/university college or other research institution. In special circumstances, an external examiner may be suitably qualified to examine within a specific area through relevant work experience.
For examination of courses in the instruction component of Doctoral degree programmes, a Doctoral degree or equivalent is required.
Section 42. Deadline for examination results
Examination results shall be made known within three weeks unless the board has stipulated a longer deadline. For Master's theses and similar large written works with an equivalent of 20 credits or more, examination results shall be made known within six weeks. The same deadline applies for reassessment of examination grades. The deadline runs from the date the appeal was entered in the journal.
Anyone who is allocated or undertakes an examining assignment is obliged to comply with the Act's main rule about deadlines for examination results.
The faculties may apply for dispensation from the stipulated deadlines for making examination results available pursuant to sub-section 3-9 clause 4 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. Such applications must be lodged in sufficient time as to enable handling by the university board a minimum of two weeks prior to the date of the examination in question.
Section 43. Announcement of examination results
The results of written examinations are notified by being published on the student web. It is the student's own responsibility to access the examination results. The University of Tromsø is not responsible for any mistakes or misunderstandings which may arise from oral messages about examination results.
Chapter VIII Appeals
Section 44. Complaints against decisions or procedural errors in connection with of examinations
Decisions based on these regulations, with the exception of the examination result, may be appealed pursuant to Chapter VI of the Public Administration Act.
Procedural errors in connection with examinations may be appealed pursuant to sub-section 5-2 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges.
Such appeals are ruled on by the university's Central Appeals.
Section 45. Explanation about the awarding of grades
A candidate is entitled to an explanation of the grades awarded for his/her performance pursuant to sub-section 5-3 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges.
Requests for an explanation about the awarding of a grade for a written examination must be submitted no more than three weeks after announcement of the grade in question. Any such requests for an explanation shall be sent to the relevant faculty.
If the request for an explanation concerns the awarded grade on an oral exam, assessments of practical skills, or an exam in performance, artistic, practical or aesthetic courses, the request must be made immediately on notification of the grade. This requests shall be directed to the examiners.
Students have the right to receive an explanation about the awarding of grades after each individual examination.
Explanations may be given orally or in writing at the examiner's discretion. An explanation shall normally be given within two weeks after the candidate requested such an explanation. The explanation shall state the general principles on which the assessment was based and explain the assessment of the candidate's performance. Written assessment guidelines or other written guidelines for assessment shall be made available to the candidate after the grade has been awarded.
Section 46. Complaints about the awarding of grades
A candidate may file a written complaint about a grade awarded for his/her own performances pursuant to sub-section 5-3 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. The written complaint shall be sent to the faculty responsible for the examination in question. Assessment of oral examinations and examinations of similar nature that cannot be reviewed may not be appealed.
Complaints about the awarding of grades shall be submitted within three weeks of the announcement of the examination results. If the request for an explanation about the awarding of a grade or complaint about procedural errors has been lodged with reference to Sections 44 and 45, the time limit for appeals pursuant to this section is reckoned from the date when the student receives the explanation or when the appeal is finally ruled on.
In the event of an appeal, the candidate's answer paper will be presented to a new examination commission, which assesses the examination from scratch. The new examination commission shall undertake a completely new assessment and, in this manner, will not have access to information about the grade, explanations about the grade or the basis of the student's complaint(s). However, the new examination commission will always receive the assessment guidelines. The awarding of grade can be in the complainant's favour or not. The awarding of grades following the reassessment may not be appealed. If the new grade deviates by two or more grades from the originally awarded grade, an additional assessment shall be undertaken before the final grade is awarded, see section 5-3 paragraph six of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. The examiners from the original and the new assessment are required to decide a final grade. If a majority of the examiners are not able to agree on a grade, the Faculty shall appoint an additional examiner who shall partake in the assessment of the examination.
For module examinations comprising several parts, a candidate may not submit a complaint before the final grade for the course is announced. Upon appeal, all parts of the module examination shall be reassessed.
If a grade shall be determined on the basis of both written and oral testing, and a student who has passed the written part complains before the final grade is given, the student must still attend the oral examination in order to pass the examination. If the complaint leads to the grade for the written part being changed, the student must re-sit the oral examination. An explanation may not be given to a student before the oral examination has been completed.
Grades awarded for group examinations may be appealed individually. Any altered grade after appeal will only apply to the student who has appealed.
For complaints about the awarding of a grade for practical skills, the work must be submitted to the faculty at the same time as the complaint is lodged.
In the event of complaints about grades or procedural errors after the candidate has receive his/her diploma, the diploma must be submitted at the same time in order for the complaint to be processed.
Chapter IX Diplomas, Diploma Supplements and transcript of records
Section 47. Transcript of records, Diploma Supplement and diploma
Upon request, a student may receive a transcript of records listing examinations they have passed at the University of Tromsø.
A diploma for attained Bachelor degrees will be issued on request if the candidate fulfils the requirements to be issued a diploma at the University of Tromsø.
Candidates who have attained a Master's degree, cand. psychol. degree or cand. med. degree in a programme of study conducted in Norwegian at the University of Tromsø will be automatically issued a diploma in the language alternative (Bokmål or Nynorsk) specified on their semester registration. The faculties may also determine that other candidates can be automatically issued a diploma.
A Diploma Supplement is attached to diplomas providing a more detailed description of the candidate's education and of the Norwegian higher education system. Such diploma supplements are valid only when presented together with the original diploma. Any surplus credits are documented on the student's transcript of records.
Diplomas are written in Norwegian unless the teaching programme is conducted in its entirety in English. Diplomas can be supplemented with a Diploma Supplement and transcript of records in English.
Only one diploma per candidate is issued within a programme of study. This also applies for Bachelor degrees comprising freely combined courses.
A new diploma will be issued if the candidate later improves a grade included on the diploma.
In order to be issued a diploma at the University of Tromsø, a minimum of 60 credits must be accumulated at the University of Tromsø.
Section 48. Semester for attained postgraduate degrees
In order to graduate in the spring semester, the final examination for a postgraduate degree must be sat in the period between January 7 and August 12. The equivalent period for the autumn semester is August 13 to January 6.
Chapter X Taking effect
Section 49. Taking effect
The Regulations for examinations at the University of Tromsø are evoked 1.8.2009.
General rules of conduct (written exams)
You must arrive at least 30 minutes before the examination starts, and be seated at your desk no later than 15 minutes before the examination starts.
The exam desk
Desks that are to be used for the examination will be clearly marked, and the Examination Regulations will be provided. If you have been granted individual adaptation you will be provided with a designated desk marked with your name. Only the following is allowed on the exam desk:
- Food and drink
- PC (only for electronic examinations)
- Writing materials
- Valid ID
- Any permitted examination support material
Outerwear and personal belongings
The invigilators will show you to the designated area for outerwear and other personal belongings. The following must be placed there:
- Outerwear (jackets, coats etc.)
- Bags, handbags, backpacks etc.
- Mobile phones and other communication equipment. These must be switched off.
- Wrist watches – both digital and analog
- Any items you have brought, that are not allowed on the exam desk
You may not use wireless computer mouse or wireless keyboard.
You may not use mobile phones or other communication equipment during the examination. If you have brought communication equipment, please turn it off, and place it in the designated area.
Wrist watches are not allowed during the examination; this includes analog wrist watches. If you are wearing a wrist watch, please take it off, and place it in the designated area.
Examination support materials
Permitted examination support materials will be specified in the examination question paper – if no examination support materials are specified, no such materials are allowed.
If you are found in possession of support materials that are not specified in the question paper, this will be regarded as an attempt at cheating. .
Please have your ID ready on your desk. If you are not able to show valid ID, you will not be allowed to sit the examination.
Using the restroom
When you need to use the restroom, the invigilator will specify which restroom you are to use.
Breaks should be restricted to 10 minutes at a time (If you have been granted resting time, you are exempt from this). Candidates who are on break simultaneously, may not in any way communicate with each other. You may not visit any store during your break. If you have your break outside of the examination building, please stay close to the entrance. You are not permitted access to newspaper, other written materials, or electronic equipment, during your break.
Fire protection instructions for examination premises
If the firealarm is triggered, all candidates shall immediately leave the premises together and await further instructions. Attendance shall be on holding location.
The completion of the written examination can generally not proceed, and the examination will be canceled. If it is considered likely that the students have not had the opportunity to talk about the examination paper outside the examination guards oversight during the evacuation, examinations may proceed. Execution of oral or practical examination may optionally proceed after the evacuation situation is over.
Withdrawal during examination
If you wish to withdraw from the examination, you will have to fill out the form “Withdrawal during examination”. You will have to do this even if the reason for withdrawing is illness. In the case of illness, you will have to hand in a medical certificate to your faculty within 48 hours, if you wish to sit a re-sit examination.
If you hand in a blank answer sheet, this will be regarded as a withdrawal.
If you have handed in a withdrawal sheet, or handed in your answer early, you may not leave the premises until 1 hour after the start of the exam (period of quarantine).
After handing in the examination
Please leave the premises immediately upon handing in your examination, or after the period of quarantine has expired. Please remain calm after handing in, and leave the premises quietly. Please refrain from speaking to fellow students until you have left the premises.
Carrying out the examination
Turn on your computer and log in to the exam system immediately upon arrival. The examination question paper will be made available in the exam system the moment the examination starts. The exam system will input your candidate number automatically into your answer paper. Participant registration will commence shortly after the start of the examination. You will have to show valid ID, and sign the list of candidates.
Once the examination time has expired, it will no longer be possible to keep writing. You will be able to see the time remaining at all times in the exam system. Your hand in must be checked by an invigilator before you may leave the premises.
The examination question papers will be handed out the moment the examination starts. Cover pages with examination sheets and rough paper sheets will also be handed out. Participant registration will commence shortly after the start of the examination. You will have to show valid ID, sign the list of candidates, and will be provided with your candidate number. Please write your candidate number on your cover page.
When the examination time has expired, the invigilators will announce this. You will then have 15 minutes of added time, to be used for filling out the cover page, and the headers on all of your exam sheets – you may only use the added 15 minutes for the cover page and headers. The headers must contain the following information: candidate number, date, page number and course code. Please do not write your name on your answer paper. You may only hand in whole sheets. If you need to correct a page number, please cross out the incorrect number, and write the correct number beside it.
It is entirely your responsibility to have your answer paper ready for hand in when the 15 minutes have expired. In other words, the invigilators are not responsible for readying and numbering your answer paper, if you have not been able to do this in the allotted time. If you have not finished numbering and readying your answer paper when the 15 minutes have expired, the invigilator will seize your answer paper. The answer paper will be put in an envelope as is, and the envelope will be sealed, marked with your candidate number, the time, and a brief explanation to why the answer paper is not readied.
You may not bring examination sheets with you from the exam premises – neither blank nor written sheets.
Fire safety instructions for examination venues
Oral and practical examinations
If the fire alarm sounds, the examination committee and candidate(s) must leave the examination venue immediately and await further instructions. Meet up at the designated assembly area.
The oral or practical examination may continue as soon as the evacuation situation is over.
If the fire alarm sounds, everyone in the examination venue must leave together immediately and await further instructions. Meet up at the designated assembly area.
If necessary, the written examination may continue as soon as the evacuation situation is over.
As soon as the building has been evacuated, the evacuation guard shall advise the evacuation leader.
Illness in connection with examination – right to re-scheduled examination
For the Spring semester of 2020, UiT has made it possible for students to submit a self-certification when absent from exams. This is stipulated in the Temporary Exam Regulations. Self-certification provides the opportunity for a postponed exam.
If you are prevented from participating in the autumn semester 2020 exam due to illness or other compelling reasons, you can submit a self-certification.
If you still wish to submit a medicial certification, you can do this in the same form.
Self-certification/medical certification needs to be submitted within one week of the exam/deadline for submitting your exam.
Be aware that you cannot submit an answer paper if you submit a self-certification.
The deadline for signing up for postponed exams is August 15 for the Autumn semester, and January 15 for the Spring semester. Signing up is done via Studentweb.
If you are sick at the time of the exam, and do not submit your self-certification/medical certification, you will not have the right to an extended test. By not being present, you will have spent one of your three attempts at the exam.
Re-scheduled examination is an extraordinary examination that is held for candidates who were suffering from acute illness in connection with the ordinary examination. Please note that acute illness is defined as illness that arose less than 14 days before the actual examination.
If you are ill on the date of the examination, in order to have the right to re-scheduled examination, you must deliver a medical certificate to the faculty that is holding the examination no later than a week after the first examination for which the medical certificate applies (Autumn semester 2020 you can submit a self-certification).
The medical certificate must contain details of which examination(s) it applies for, as well as the duration of the period of illness. A medical certificate intended for submission to employers will not be approved as valid medical documentation. The certificate must relate to the examination in question. Details about the period of illness are important, both in order to confirm that the illness is acute and so that the Examination Office can set a date for the re-scheduled examination. In accordance with Section 21 of the regulations for examinations, the re-scheduled examination shall be held as soon as possible after the reasons for absence have ceased, and normally no later than two months after the start of a new semester. In practice, there is often more than one candidate who has right to re-scheduled examination in the course so the date is set so that all these candidates can sit the examination at the same time.
In order to be able to sit a re-scheduled examination, you need to register for the examination via StudentWeb by August 15 in the autumn semester and January 15 in the spring semester.
NB! You cannot cancel registration for re-scheduled examination.
If you do not attend the re-scheduled examination or withdraw from it, you will not have an opportunity to sit another re-scheduled examination. In such cases, you have to wait for the next ordinary examination in the course. This also applies if you are prevented from attending the re-scheduled examination owing to illness. If you fail the re-scheduled examination, you need to wait until the next ordinary examination to re-take the examination, cf. the regulations for examinations.
Illness during the actual examination:
If you fall ill during the actual examination, you need to fill in a withdrawal form. You are informed on this form that you need to seek immediate medical attention and submit a medical certificate to the faculty/department that held the examination within a week in order to have the right to re-scheduled examination.
Illness in connection with examinations that comprise of several parts:
With respect to illness that arises during examinations that comprise of several parts, e.g. a home examination + supervised written examination + final oral examination, when you sit the re-scheduled examination you do not have the opportunity to re-take any parts of the examination that you sat during the ordinary examination, cf. Section 21 of the regulations for examinations.
If you suffer from acute illness before or during a home examination, in order to have right to re-scheduled examination you need to submit a medical certificate to the faculty that arranges the examination no later than a week after the submission deadline for the home examination passes. With respect to examinations that comprise of several parts (e.g. a home examination + supervised written examination + oral examination), in some cases you will need to sit all the parts as re-scheduled examination, while in other cases only some of the parts. This will depend on the duration of the period of illness as well as on the examination system. For instance, a candidate that is ill during the home examination may be well again on the date of the written examination. If the candidate shall also have a final oral examination after the written examinations, in this case he/she shall only have the home examination and oral examination as re-scheduled examination.
Examples of actions which are counted as cheating or as an attempt to cheat are:
- To use unauthorised supports during the exam
- To present the work of other people as one's own work
- To cite sources or in other ways to use sources in one's written work without referencing those sources properly
- To submit an examination answer which has previously been submitted as an examination answer at the University of Tromsø or any other institution of higher education
- To engage in unauthorized communication with other students during the examination
- To act in conflict with the examination regulations or in any other unlawful way which may give one advantages at the exam
Appeal concerning procedural error
Procedural errors connected to an examination may be appealed according to section 5-2 of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges (not translated).
Procedural errors may, among other things, be errors in the exam question paper or the assessment guideline, or errors relating the examination arrangement.
How to appeal
Deadline for submitting an appeal for procedural error is three weeks after the time the student was aware or should have been aware of the issue. The appeal must be written, grounded and it must be clearly stated in the appeal that it is a formal appeal concerning procedural errors.
If the appeal is not met by the faculty, the appeal will be further processed and in the end ruled on by UiT's Appeals Commitee.
If an error has been made which may have affected the assessment of your exam, or your performance during the exam, the initial grade will be annulled, and a new exam arranged. If the error may be rectified through a new assessment, the paper will go through a new assessment with new assessors.
A re-sit examination is an extraordinary examination that may be held for candidates who failed the last ordinary examination. Re-sit examinations are not held for candidates who fail re-scheduled examination or other extraordinary examination.
The deadline for registering for re-sit examination is August 15 for the autumn semester and January 15 for the spring semester. You register for re-sit examination via StudentWeb.
NB! You cannot cancel registration for re-sit examination.
Access to take a re-sit examination at the university varies. The following three alternatives are all practiced:
(1) Open continuation: Everyone who failed the ordinary examination has access to a re-sit examination.
(2) Conditional continuation: If a re-scheduled examination is being held in a course for candidates who were ill and have registered for re-scheduled examination, candidates who failed the examination will also be given the opportunity to participate. If no one was ill, candidates who failed the examination need to wait until the next ordinary examination.
(3) No continuation: Everyone who failed needs to wait until the next ordinary examination.

Requesting an explanation of the grade through Studentweb
Log in to Studentweb, press "More" in the top menu and select "Exam appeals". Find the correct course and click the button "Request explanation of grade". If it is not possible to request for an explanation of grade in Studentweb.
Your appeal must be sent within three weeks of the examination result being announced. Please consult 'Exam appeals' in the StudentWeb to find the deadline for the exam in question.
