In relation to the project “A multidisciplinary route for safety and security from the High North to South Korea” funded under UTFORSK programme by the HK-Dir (August 2021 – July 2023), two of our group members, Masoud Naseri and Are Sydnes took part in a two-day workshop organised at Kyung Hee University (KHU), Global Campus, Yongin, South Korea, 23-24 June 2022.

In this workshop, researchers from the Department of Nuclear Engineering at KHU and Department of Technology and Safety at UiT presented their research projects and discussed opportunities for further research collaboration, student exchange, staff mobility, investigated long-term plans for improving the quality of education and research in risk, safety, security, and resilience fields from both the technical and societal aspects.

During this workshop, a platform was established for further collaboration in developing a joint PhD course. In particular, risk-informed decision-making, network resilience, emergency preparedness and mass evacuation were among the topics that were highlighted by both parties to be further investigated as PhD course modules. Under PhD-student exchange and joint supervision schemes, these modules will be studied and researched by UiT and KHU PhD students in a series of PhD-student seminars that will be arranged in both Tromsø and Yongin during fall 2022 and in a follow-up workshop during Spring 2023 in Tromsø.
