Admission requirements

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business. Students applying for admission must have a grade point average of minimum C.

Course content

This course provides an overview of the principles of entrepreneurial leadership and teams, which are key elements associated with successful new venture creation.

The course is divided in to three parts:
Part I lays the foundation for the course by introducing students to the key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and reviewing some of the relevant literatures on entrepreneurship theory. This provides context for the subsequent discussions on leadership and teams.

Part II deals with entrepreneurial leadership and covers analytical approaches - trait, distributed, charismatic; leadership styles; entrepreneurial vision and key characteristics of successful entrepreneurial leaders.

Part III deals with entrepreneurial teams and covers analytical frameworks; team types - founding and top management teams; team composition and individual roles.

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to reflect on the literature, discuss and debate key concepts with their peers, and to apply their learning to their own business project.


Objectives of the course

The aim of the course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of key theoretical concepts associated with entrepreneurial leadership and teams and their role in successful new venture creation. Particular emphasis is given to creativity as a core component of an entrepreneurial leader¿s skill set, and to the importance of achieving balanced entrepreneurial teams.

Students who have successfully completed the course should have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge and comprehension:

  • Knowledge of how to critique different leadership styles
  • Knowledge of how to analyse entrepreneurial teams
  • Knowledge of how to apply team concepts to their own business project
  • Knowledge of how to develop effective leadership strategies

Skills:

The course should prepare the student to:

  • Use creativity to develop entrepreneurial leadership capability.
  • Recognise the value of different team roles within the venture Analyse relevant literatures and apply key concepts to their own business project.
  • Make a presentation to potential investors platforming the entrepreneurial leadership and team dimensions of the business venture.

Competence:

Students should be able to work both individually and in teams to review relevant literatures, critique and debate key theoretical concepts and apply these in practice to their own business projects. Students should be able to convince potential investors of the significant value they are able to add to their projects by paying attention to the leadership and team dimensions of the business.

Teaching methods

Lectures, in-class discussions, group work and presentations, analysis of case studies and various readings alongside the application of theoretical concepts to real life enterprise projects.

Assessment

Students will be evaluated through their contribution to in class exercises and discussions, as well as through two assignments - one group and one individual.
