autumn 2014 BIO-2508 Aquaculture I - 10 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Applicants from outside the Nordic countries: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

Theoretical subject. The course is available for students at the study programs: Fiskeri- og havbruksvitenskap, Fiskehelse, Biologi, klima og miljø and Arktisk forurensningsbiologi og forvaltning. The course is also available to exchange students and free-movers at a biology study program. The course is available as a singular course.

Applicants from Nordic countries must have:

Generell studiekompetanse, samt følgende spesielle opptakskrav:

Matematikk R1 eller matematikk S1+S2 og i tillegg ett av følgende programfag:

  • Matematikk (R1+R2)
  • Fysikk (1+2)
  • Kjemi (1+2)
  • Biologi (1+2)
  • Informasjonstekn (1+2)
  • Geofag (1+2)
  • Teknologi og forskningslære (1+2)

Application code: 9336 (Nordic applicants). All participants must have taken introductory level university courses, and achieved pass grades, in these subjects. Recommended prerequisites: BIO-2506 Introduction to fish biology

International applicants: Higher Education Entrance Qualification and certified language requirements in English. It is a requirement that students have  some prior knowledge of biology and ecology, chemistry and mathematics. A list of the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification in Norway can be found on the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education website - nokut.no

Course content

The course is an introduction to culture of aquatic organisms. Emphasis is put on species that are common to the Norwegian aquaculture industry, but aquaculture in temperate and tropical areas will also be covered. The lectures focus mainly on production of juveniles, breeding/genetics, feed and nutrition, and fish health.

Objectives of the course

The course will give students an introduction to the culture of aquatic organisms, based on biological and technological prerequisites for individual species.

 

Students having completed Bio-2508 Aquaculture I:

  • Have broad theoretical knowledge on world aquaculture productions, from cultured plants to fish
  • Can describe farming techniques of species common to the Norwegian aquaculture industry
  • Have knowledge on basic principles of fish breeding, nutrition and health.
  • Have understanding of hatchery techniques based on the biological and technological prerequisitesfor individual species.
  • Are able to read and understand scientific literature

Assessment

Four hour written exam. A graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail. In order to sit an examination, the student must complete and gain approval for any coursework requirements.

Coursework requirement: Excursion report

There will be a re-sit examination for students that did not pass the previous ordinary examination.
