    Research interests

    My research is focussed on enzymes, enzyme inhibitors and structural proteins. These enzymes and proteins are normally involved in the general metabolism, energy generation, regulation of blood pressure, development, cell signalling and structural integrity of the extracellular matrix, but also in various diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and epidermolysis bullosa. For the moment I work with two different groups of enzyme, dehydrogenases and proteinases. Studies on purified enzymes are performed in order to understand their biochemical characteristics which include their reaction mechanism, sensitivity to inhibitors and activators, substrate preferences, protein-protein and protein-sugar interactions, function of individual amino acids, bound water molecules, metals and other cofactors. Studies are also performed on the expression of these enzymes and enzyme inhibitors in cell and organ cultures in order to understand how they are regulated, and if there is an altered expression of them in certain diseases. The goal of our research is to provide new knowledge that can be used in the fight against diseases.
