Workshop: Greenhouse gases in the ocean and climate change

Relevant proxy methods for greenhouse gases in the ocean and climate have been presented and discussed during the workshop on “Greenhouse gases in the ocean and climate change” organized by the PhD-Trainee School in Arctic Marine Geology & Geophysics, the Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø and the Norwegian Research School in Climate Dynamics (ResClim).

The workshop was hosted at the Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø from Monday September 21st to Friday 25th 2015. During the five days of the workshop, students and eight invited speakers, many who are world-renowned experts in their field, presented their current research and applied proxies. The workshop program offered more than 25 hours of lectures and exercises focused on theoretical and practical applications of methods. Talks given during the meeting raised a wide range of subjects related to marine sediments and foraminiferal research.

First two days were designated for geochemical and biological processes connected to ocean acidification and climate change, anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems and factors controlling benthic foraminifera and ostracods.

The third and fourth day of the workshop was dedicated to the effects of methane on marine environment. During the last day, studies about the paleoproductivity and storage of organic carbon were presented. In addition, an inside into the technology, innovations and effort it takes to conduct culture studies and experiments both in the lab and in the field was given. The lecturers successfully introduced a combination of classical lecturing as well as activities including student/teacher interaction.

  • Jelle Bijma - Alfred Wegener Institute, Germany
  • Jochen Knies - CAGE and Geological Survey of Norway, Norway
  • Helen Findlay - Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK
  • Jutta Wollenburg - Alfred Wegener Institute, Germany
