PhD courses in "Sensory Marketing" will be held at the University of Tromsø, Tromsø 20.-24. June 2016

Course content

The purpose of this seminar is to provide Ph.D.-level coverage of the key research work in the domain of sensory marketing. For each session, a range of articles will be discussed. For each topic, our goals will be to determine the main ideas and research questions driving work in that topic area, what we have learned from the assigned readings, where the gaps are in our knowledge, and what ideas for new research those gaps imply. In addition, this course will allow students to develop insights and research ideas in the domain of sensory marketing.

Teaching methods

Each student should come to the seminar prepared to discuss each assigned article in depth and to present their thoughts about the major ideas, contributions, and scope for improvement of each article. In addition, based on the assigned readings, each student should generate an idea for a research study for each session the idea for the research study should be stimulated by the assigned articles in the focal topic area. In this regard, you will be responsible for a one-page (double-spaced) write-up for each class session focusing on a research idea you believe potentially emanates from that day`s readings.

Ideally, these brief write-ups will propose new study/studies designed to extend particular paper(s) or to build a bridge across papers, etc. (see Appendix A for details).

Each student will also be expected to work on a research paper, which can be a design for a set of studies, a critical literature review, etc. Midway through the course, we will discuss preliminary ideas for the papers, and each student will be asked to present/discuss their research paper idea on that day.

The final research papers should typically be 12-20 pages (double-spaced) in length and will be due exactly 2 months after the end of the course. You will also need to present your research paper in class ¿ you should use feedback obtained during this presentation to revise and improve your paper.

Details regarding the session-specific research study ideas and the research paper are provided in Appendices A and B (at the end of this syllabus) and will be discussed in details in the first session.

CLASS STRUCTURE, ATTENDANCE, AND EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner with active participation from the students. Therefore, advance preparation on your part is absolutely essential. You are expected to complete all the readings prior to the beginning of each class session. Your class participation grade would be heavily influenced by your active participation in class discussions and activities.

Do not assume that regular class attendance without active quality participation will qualify for a high class participation grade. Also, merely asking questions does NOT qualify for class participation grades.

Assessment

In order to pass the exam, each student will have to provide:

Participation - in all parts of the course.

Written scientific paper - by the submission date indicated below; subject will be provided during the course.

Grading Your grades will be weighted in the following fashion:

Class Participation and Session-Specific Research Ideas 30%

Research Paper 70%

Evaluated with pass/fail. There will not be arranged a re-sit exam for this course.

Recommended reading/syllabus

Required readings will be available several days before the course starts.
