Iva Parlov

Job description

Dr. Iva Parlov is a postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea at the Faculty of Law, UiT - The Arctic University of Norway. She is currently investigating legal challenges and opportunities concerning the regulation of maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) under the law of the sea regime. In August 2020, she defended her PhD thesis which examined the rights and obligations of coastal States in relation to foreign ships in need of assistance and shipwrecks, focusing in particular on issues of intervention, places of refuge, salvage and wreck removal. During her PhD, Dr. Parlov undertook an internship at the International Maritime Organization's Maritime Knowledge Centre, which exposed her to the practical workings of the Organization. She lectures in international law, the law of the sea and shipping law. Dr. Parlov has worked for two major law firms specializing in maritime law in Croatia, where she was engaged in various domestic and international matters concerning maritime law, marine insurance, contracts, administrative law, tort law, and corporate law. She holds a master degree in law (mag iur. cum laude; Faculty of Law, University of Rijeka, Croatia), a LL.M degree in international maritime law (cum laude; IMO International Maritime Law Institute, Malta), and a PhD in the law of the sea (UiT- the Arctic University of Norway). Dr. Parlov has also attended the IFLOS Summer Academy hosted at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (Hamburg, Germany), and the winter course offered at the Hague Academy of International Law, where she undertook additional studies in the field of international law of the sea, maritime law, and general international law respectively.
