Biology of Stem cells and chondrocytes. Implications in cartilage repair

This project deals with the biology and physiology of cells used for regenerative purposes in the clinics, including articular chondrocytes and adult stem cells. Our group has worked with in vitro culture systems intensively over the last 10 years. Thus, one of the most important research areas in our group is to study the biology of tissue cells used in transplantation strategies during in vitro culture. Consequently, in this project we study the processes of cell de-differentiation and re-differentiation during ex-vivo manipulation of cells. Additionally, many efforts are put on exploring the potential of adult stem cells from different sources to regenerate cartilage and bone.
