autumn 2017 INF-3981 Master's Thesis in Computer Science - 30 ECTS

Type of course

The course is solely for students on the Master's programme in technology and is not available to any other category of students as a singular or elective course. Exchange students may write a master's thesis in certain cases. Normally, the master thesis can not be done in groups of students. To be assigned a project students must have passed all courses in their study plan and the required practical work experience must have been carried out and approved.

Course content

One semester master's thesis project for master of engineering students ('sivilingeniør'). The professional content will depend on the profile of the chosen paper. Contact the Department of Computer Science during the 9th semester if a diploma paper is desired. The diploma thesis project has to be approved by the Department Council according to an application in the form of a supervision contract along with a project description. Ordinary registration to the exam via the Studentweb.

Objectives of the course

The student can plan and conduct a limited research project independently within the chosen discipline of computer science, and in a scientific way discuss and report the results of the study in relation to existing literature in the field.

Language of instruction and examination

The thesis has to be written in Norwegian or English.

Teaching methods

Individual guidance and supervision according to agreement. According to capacity and requirement, projects are offered in the spring or fall semester. 1 semester duration.

Assessment

The exam includes a submission of a master's thesis within a set deadline. The deadline is set in connection with the approval of the supervision contract for the master thesis, but is normally June 1st and December 15th for submission in the spring and fall semester, respectively.

Grading scale: Letter grades A-F.

Re-submitting of the thesis:
Only if a master's project is graded "F" (fail) may the project be resubmitted in revised form. A new deadline for submission will be stipulated. The deadline for resubmitting the project is 6 weeks from the point in time when the candidate was informed about the exam result. If the project receives a grade of "F" a second time the student can apply to the Department for the assignment of a new project.

Postponed submission:
If a medical certificate is provided the student is given a postponed deadline for submitting the master's thesis according to regulations in section 21 in Regulations for examinations at the UiT. In the event that the project cannot be delivered by the stipulated deadline the student can apply for a postponement of up to 6 weeks where there are compelling grounds for the submission. The postponement of up to 6 weeks counts for both part-time and full-time students.

Non-submission of thesis:
If a project is not submitted within the stipulated time limit and any application for postponement has not been granted the candidate will be reported as not being present ("ikke møtt") at the examination. The student can then apply to the Department for assignment of a new project.
