autumn 2017 ARK-2100 Archaeology for Exchange Students - 30 ECTS

Type of course

This course is intended for exchange students in Archaeology, and is open for those at an advanced stage of their BA study in archaeology.

Students should be participants in formal exchange programs between the Institute for Archaeology, History and Religion Studies and departments at other universities. Independent students also may apply. If you are interested, please write us a letter outlining your background in earlier archaeological studies, and proposing one or more potential topics of study.

Students are required to make an agreement with a staff member regarding supervision and a study topic well prior to arrival.

Applicants from Nordic countries: Generell studiekompetanse

International applicants:  Higher Education Entrance Qualification and certified language requirements in English.

Recommended prerequisites or equivalents Prospective students should have completed at least 30 ECTS credits in archaeology, which should include basic knowledge of theory, method and culture-history.


Course content

Students should choose a topic from the Department's special fields of competence, such as: Arctic archaeology, Sámi archaeology, heritage studies, ethnicity studies, theoretical archaeology and the archaeology of Northern Norway. The special fields open to study may change due to sabbaticals among members of the staff. Acceptance to the course depends on the possibility of finding a staff member able to supervise. At the beginning of the course, the student and supervisor will establish a concrete study plan.

Students who successfully complete this course should have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • Have solid theoretical, methodological or culture-historical knowledge appropriate to the topic chosen for study  

Skills

  • Be able to develop an archaeological problem, apply relevant theoretical or methodological resources, and select data suitable to address the problem
  • Be able to reflect on, and justify, one's own scholarly choices and adjust them through supervision

General Competance

  • Have developed the ability to plan and implement a larger writing project that requires substantial research and organizational skills
  • Have developed the ability to discuss and reflect critically upon scholarly topics

Teaching methods

Students are offered 5 months of thematic study, with up to 40 hours (including preparation) of individual supervision by one of the staff members of the Department.

Assessment

The course requirements consist of an essay of 20-30 pages (7000 -10 500 words) and an oral exam. The essay will be given a preliminary evaluation, which will be adjusted up or down into a final grade after the oral exam. The final grade is given on a scale of A-E for pass, F for fail.

The course is open for re-sit examination early in the following semester.


Recommended reading/syllabus

At the beginning of the program, the student and the supervisor will together select literature of about 1500 pages.
