Course content

  • Introduction to Risk-Based Inspection (RBI).
  • Introduction to DNV Standard DNV-RP-G101 (Risk-based inspection of offshore topsides static mechanical equipment).
  • Degradation mechanisms and Probability of Failure (PoF).
  • Consequence of Failure (CoF) assessment.
  • Risk assessment and acceptance.
  • Use of inspection and monitoring.
  • Application of RBI in planning of inspection of offshore platform.
  • Concept of Condition monitoring


Objectives of the course

Knowledge

The student:

  • will be able to explain basic definition and concept of risk-based inspection (RBI) and condition monitoring.
  • will be able to understand basic principles and methods used in condition monitoring of rotating machinery, piping, pressure vessels and load bearing structures.
  • Will be able to explain some of the available standard of RBI of offshore equipment.

 

Skills

The student:

  • will be able to carry out and make use of existing knowledge and theories of risk based inspection and condition monitoring in a real situations.
  • will be able to carry out risk assessment of engineering systems
  • Will be able to adopt the risk-based inspection programs for a production process/industries.
  • Will be able to identify the suitable method for condition monitoring.

 

Competence 

The students:

  • Will be able to apply RBI in planning for inspection of offshore platform and other industries as well as condition monitoring.

will be able to reflect on their professional practice, work in groups, manage report writing, presentation, and  function in a multi-disciplinary team.

Teaching methods

Lectures, project and home exercise.

Assessment

Project report and home exercise (50%) and 4-hour written exam (50%). Letter grading A - F.
