Type of course

The course aims to prepare exchange students for Norwegian higher education. Degree students can apply the administration of the faculty of their studies to take this course.

Course content

Instruction and practices in the four basic language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course also includes some instruction in Norwegian grammar. It equals the first half of NOR-0042, Norwegian for Foreign Students, Level 1, and corresponds to the A1 level of the Common European Framework for Language, CEF.

Objectives of the course

At the end of the course the student is expected to have attained the following learning objectives:

Knowledge and understanding:

The student is able to understand slow and clear Norwegian speech about everyday matters

Skills:

The student knows how to

Conduct a simple conversation using a concrete vocabulary and to ask for information

Read the texts in their course books and similar texts on subjects to do with daily life

Competence:

The student will have a basic vocabulary of appr. 1,500 words, and knowledge of the basic rules of grammar and phonetics

Language of instruction and examination

Norwegian, with English as an auxiliary language.

Teaching methods

Seminars, lectures and practical exercises through 60 class hours in total. All classes are compulsory, with an 80% attendance rate required to qualify for the exam.

Assessment

The following compulsory requirements must be met before the student is allowed to take the exam:

4 written assignments to be approved by the teacher.
Compulsory attendance.

The course concludes with an oral exam.

No aids are permitted.

The exam is graded on a scale from A-F, with E as the lowest passing grade.
