autumn 2018 BIO-3014 Biological Rhythms - 10 ECTS

Concerns only admission to singular courses: Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.  

Type of course

Master course for biology students - principally aimed at MSc-students specializing in "Arctic Animal Physiology". The course is available as a singular course.  

Admission requirements

Local admission, application code 9371 - - Master`s level singular course.

Admission requires a Bachelor`s degree (180 ECTS) or equivalent qualification, with a major in biology of minimum 80 ECTS.

BIO-1006 Animal- and plant physiology, BIO-2002 Physiology II (Animal Physiology)

Course content

The course reviews circadian and seasonal rhythmicity, the behavioural and ecological importance of biological rhythms and their theoretical basis, as well as the underlieing anatomy, physiology, genetic and molecular biology.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of the general principles and central questions in Chronobiology
  • Explain the ecological and behavioural importance of biological rhythms
  • Demonstrate and explain the -    physiological, -    genetic and -    molecular basis for biological rhythms 
  • Demonstrate and explain examples of biological rhythms

General skills: •

  • Understanding the process of generating scientific knowledge
  • Communicating science both, orally and in writing
  • Review and extract relevant information from scientific literature
  • Critical analysis of published scientific literature within the discipline at MSc level
  • Presenting scientific content clearly and in logical order while using language appropriate for the audience and occasion
  • Proposing, discussing and evaluating hypothesis
  • Teaching

Teaching methods

Seminars (2 hrs per week) with presentations and discussions. A practical exercise ("dry lab") will be held on 2 occasions instead of the seminar.

Assessment

Oral presentation (30%) and 3 h final written exam (70%). Both must be passed in order to receive a passing grade. A graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail.

Coursework requirements: lab report - must be approved in order to be able to take the ordinary or re-sit written examination.

There will be a re-sit examination for students that did not pass the previous ordinary examination.
