autumn 2019 JUR-8008 Examination of the Role and Ethics of the Law. Introduction to the Scandinavian model. - 2 ECTS

Type of course

The course is one of six courses of the mandatory part of the PhD programme.

Course content

The course consists of three parts:

 

The first part on the apprentices' exam in legal science includes the quality requirements to be fulfilled to be granted a PhD degree in legal science. Further, it includes issues regarding choice of research methods, supervision, practical information regarding research stays abroad and administrating /organizing the workday of a researcher.  Their research questions and the interest of knowledge of the students are decisive for their methodical approach.  

 

The students shall be informed about where and how they may seek help for practical arrangement of their work, research stays abroad, what assistance that is offered to them by the University Library be offered training in use of electronically based sources of information and use of information and communication technology necessary to administer their research projects.

 

The second part consists of an introduction to Scandinavian legal thinking/methods. It shall enable the students to participate in the seminars of the other courses of the programme.

 

The third part deals with the role of legal science and of the legal researcher and ethics. Particularly the role of the legal researcher in relation of other members of the legal profession such as judges and lawyers is investigated. A central question is what role a legal researcher can and should have. The PhD students shall also discuss the ethical standards of researchers and legal research.


Objectives of the course

Knowledge:

After having completed the course the students shall have acquired:

  • Advanced knowledge on the criteria of science and the requirements on the granting of the PhD degree in legal science;
  • Advanced knowledge on different methodological approaches in legal science;
  • Advanced knowledge on Scandinavian legal thinking/methods; and
  • Advanced knowledge on the role of legal science and researcher in society and have reflected on ethical questions related to this and other themes.

 

Skills and general qualifications:

After having completed the course, the student will:

  • Have a widened perspective on the choice of legal methods;
  • Identify and reflect on ethical dilemmas met by the legal researcher


Language of instruction and examination

English. The curriculum may include texts written both in Scandinavian languages and English.

Teaching methods

The teaching is a combination of reading seminars, short presentations by students and teachers, discussions and information by the Faculty administration and the University Library.

Assessment

There is no formal exam. The students are assessed after having completed all courses of the PhD programme in law through the assessment of their thesis submitted for the PhD degree in legal science by a panel appointed by the Faculty.

 

It is mandatory for the students to be present at seminars and other training activities and to actively participate in the discussions. With active participation is meant that the students briefly shall present the theme of their thesis and during the seminars try to link the themes with their own project. In addition all students are expected to present articles during the seminars in accordance with the guidelines for reading seminars.
