autumn 2019 KJE-3805 Individual Special Curriculum - Master's Degree - 5 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

Theoretical and/or practical course. The course is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program. The course is also available for exchange students on Master level.

Admission requirements

Required:

A bachelor degree in chemistry or equivalent, with a grade C or better in the Norwegian grading system.


Course content

The project aims to introduce the student to problems and research activities within a topic within chemistry, and a certain independent effort is required. The project can be theoretical and/or practical in nature. The course will be completed by a written report or an exam at the end of the course. A project can be given at any of the research groups at Department of Chemistry, depending on capacity.

The student will learn to combine and apply knowledge and skills in an independent study or a practical project. The student will also learn how to combine information from literature and/or own results to write a report or project on a given topic. 


Objectives of the course

The candidate will have acquired a solid and broad theoretical basis to understand relevant topics in chemistry. This means that the student:

 

Knowledge:

  • can use and expand knowledge obtained in Bachelor level chemistry courses relevant for the project on Master level
  • can describe and explain the main elements in theories relevant for the project
  • can relate the project to a broader theoretic and practical context
  • can describe and explain the background for methods which have been used in the project.
  • can suggest research methods in chemistry relevant for a given hypothesis

 

Skills:

  • can apply skills obtained in Bachelor level chemistry courses in research projects om Master level
  • can work structurally, analytically and independently in chemistry projects
  • can find and analyse relevant literature references and methods
  • can work independently on a defined, specific problem within the chosen chemistry topic
  • can apply appropriate scientific methods, equipment and instruments to approach the research hypothesis or topic
  • can give an overview over relevant work done by others within the same topic as the project
  • can independently document, analyse and communicate the work and the results from the project in a professional and scientific manner
  • can plan and perform a chemistry project on Master level

 

Competence:

  • can communicate clearly and concisely background and results for a project
  • can find and analyse research literature
  • can follow regulations and ethical guidelines for scientific work
  • can work both independently and in collaboration with a supervisor on a project 


Language of instruction and examination

Norwegian or English.

Teaching methods

Individual supervision over one semester. The student may approach a supervisor by him/herself, or a supervisor may be appointed. Supervision will be given within a frame of 8 hours.

Assessment

Form of examination will be decided together with supervisor. Either oral exam, written exam, home examination, written report or project assignment. Grade passed/not passed.

No continuation exam.

Work requirement: A minimum work requirement related to the project is decided together with the supervisor.  

Application for approval of specialized curriculum must be submitted to the department  for processing/approval by September 1/February 1.
