Type of course

This course is an introductory PhD course in the CASTL Graduate School in Linguistics. It is recommended as part of the compulsory credits in subject-specific theory and methods within the instruction component of the PhD programme in the humanities and social sciences.

Admission requirements

PhD students in linguistics, or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+2 years (or equivalent) in linguistics are qualified applicants to the course. Applicants with a master´s degree in other fields may be qualified if they can document that they have advanced undergraduate courses in Phonology.

Valid documentation is a statement from your institution that you are a registered PhD student. Applicants who are not PhD students must upload a Master´s diploma along with Transript of Records. If the diploma is issued in another language than the Scandinavian languages or English you have to submitt a Diploma Supplement/ English translation of the diploma. PhD students are exempt form semester fee.

Course content

PhD students will be given a grounding in recent developments in modern phonological theory, including both established results and modern analytic techniques.

Objectives of the course

After passing the course, the students will have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of advanced results and generalizations from the most recent research in phonological theory.
  • Awareness of  the current issues in the field and how they  affect theory formation.

Skills:

  • Ability to manipulate the newest and most advanced formal techniques being developed in phonology.
  • Phonological and analytical skills in discovering novel empirical data and generalizations, with respect to the sound patterns of individual languages.
  • Ability to propose and test new linguistic hypotheses and contribute to abstract theorizing in the field of phonology at an international level.

General competence:

  • Solid foundation in the field of phonology.

Teaching methods

The course will last 13 weeks and consist of 2 hours of lecture per week and 2 hours of seminar/project work per week. Practical problem solving work is already built in to the schedule.

Assessment

Active participation is obligatory.

A 3000-3750 word paper on a topic or problem to be solved, as assigned by the lecturer.

The paper must be submitted for assessment six weeks after the completion of the course.

The examination is evaluated according to the pass/fail grading system. Students who have failed may register for a re-sit examination.
