spring 2020 GEO-8127 Threedimensional seismic interpretation - 5 ECTS
Admission requirements
Registered PhD students may apply for admission.
PhD students outside UiT must attach a confirmation of their status as a PhD student from their home institution.
The course has the capacity of 16 students.
If there are more applicants than available places in the course, students will be prioritized in the following order:
1. PhD students at the PhD program in Science at UiT - The Arctic University of Tromsø
2. PhD students at other PhD programs at UiT - The Arctic University of Tromsø
3. PhD students at other universities
Course content
The course focuses on the geological evaluation of 3D seismic data. Emphasis is placed on qualitative interpretation techniques for evaluating structural and sedimentological (stratigraphic) processes. Quantitative interpretation techniques for reservoir and hydrocarbon (HC) prediction (inversion, porosity and HC modelling) will be treated only briefly. Course participants will obtain practical and theoretical knowledge of the most up-to-date 3D interpretation techniques. This will enable them to carry out an independent analysis of 3D data using GeoFrame visualisation and mapping modules, and to describe and present structural and sedimentological models. Basic knowledge of sedimentology, structural geology and geophysics is assumed.
The courses ¿GEO-8127 3D Seismic Interpretation¿ and ¿GEO-3115 Petroleum Geology¿ will be given as partly integrated courses. Students attending both courses will be given the opportunity to use the gained geological understanding, maps and closures generated in ¿GEO-3127 3D Seismic Interpretation¿ in ¿GEO-3115 Petroleum Geology¿ with regards to petroleum system, reservoir, seal, risk and volume analysis.
