spring 2020 GEO-3129 Drilling and production of oil and gas - 5 ECTS
Admission requirements
Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other program for basis of admission.
Application code: 9371.
Course content
This course focus on drilling and production of oil and gas. It includes the drilling process, safety, oil and gas flow into and up through the well, processing on the platform and subsequent transport. It also includes processing of oil and gas, process equipment and safety equipment.
The course is divided into two parts: drilling and production of oil and gas.
Objectives of the course
Knowledge
The student has
- knowledge of the characteristics of different reservoir fluids.
- knowledge of estimated fluid compositions at various separator¿s temperatures and pressures.
- knowledge of traditional equipment on the drill floor, such as the drill string and other equipment.
- knowledge about drilling mud properties including flow calculations, the functions of mud, and how this relates to the fluid pressures downhole, the pore and formation pressures.
- knowledge about safety problems and the equipment and procedures used to prevent accidents.
Skills
The student can
- characterize different reservoir fluids.
- estimate fluid compositions at various separator's temperatures and pressures.
- estimate oil and gas production rates from saturated and under-saturated reservoir fluids on both short and long term.
- calculate the main mechanical loads on the drill string, and the safe loading on the drill string.
General competences
The student can
- carry out the most important elements of geological research projects: penetrating literature, carrying out research, analyzing data, and communicating results to fellow students/scientists.
- critically evaluate and judge the quality of data and conclusions presented in primary databases, research articles and scientific reports.
- solve scientific problems analytically and prompt in written English and present research results orally in plenum.
- work independent and in a team.
