spring 2020 GEO-3127 3-D Seismic Interpretation - 5 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 December for the spring semester.

Type of course

This course is not available as a single course, and is not available to exchange students or free-movers.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a program of study of at least three years, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other program for basis of admission.

GEO-8127 Threedimensional seismic interpretation 5 stp

Course content

This course gives a thorough treatment of the geological evaluation of 3D seismic data. Emphasis is placed on qualitative interpretation techniques for evaluating structural and sedimentological (stratigraphical) processes. Quantitative interpretation techniques for reservoir and hydrocarbon (HC) prediction (inversion, porosity and HC modelling) will be treated briefly.

Recommended prerequisites

GEO-3123 Marine Geophysics

Objectives of the course

Knowledge

The student has

  • overview of current research and new methods in 3D seismic data interpretation.
  • knowledge of the basic practical and theoretical seismic methods and 3D seismic interpretation techniques.
  • knowledge of the integration between seismic and well-data.
  • understanding of the most common seismic attributes and their proper selection for analyzing structure, stratigraphy and hydrocarbon occurrence in 3D seismic data.
  • understanding of main advantages of 3D seismic data compared to older 2D seismic data.
  • understanding of most common use of 3D seismic data in research and industry.

Skills

The student can

  • perform a 3D seismic stratigraphic and structural interpretation.
  • use 3D seismic data to describe and present structural and sedimentological models.
  • use 3D seismic data to interpret and describe offshore architecture, horizons and fault systems.
  • recognize and discriminate fluid effects (DHIs) on 3D seismic data.
  • recognize acquisition and/or processing artifacts in 3D seismic data and avoid the most common interpretation pitfalls.
  • use 3D seismic data to perform simple depositional environment analysis of the continental margins in the Barents Sea.

General competences

The student has

  • the capability to carry out an independent interpretation of 3D seismic data.
  • the ability to carry out the most important elements of geological research projects: penetrating literature, interpreting and analyzing data, and communicating results in written and oral form to fellow students/scientists.
  • the ability to communicate central subjects of 3D seismic interpretation further and to discuss views, experiences and choice of methods with geologists and geophysicists.

Language of instruction and examination

English.

Teaching methods

20 hours of lectures, 20 hours of practical exercises.

Assessment

Oral examination that counts 100 % of the final grade.

Grading scale: Pass/fail. A re-sit exam will be arranged for students who do not pass the examination for this course.

Compulsory learning activities

Admittance to the exam requires participation in the lectures and exercises as well as approval of a report
