spring 2020 IND-3013 GENI Applied Research Project - 5 ECTS

Type of course

The student must be enrolled in the Master in Governance and Entrepreneurship in Northern and Indigenous Areas (GENI).

Obligatory prerequisites

IND-3012 GENI - Research Methods and Indigenous Research Ethics

Course content

The GENI Applied Research Project builds on the research proposal and brief literature review completed in the "GENI Research Methods and Indigenous Research Ethics" course. In cooperation with the course instructor, an academic supervisor, and a host supervisor, students negotiate a final research contract.

The research project must have academic merit but also serve the needs of the host. In most cases, the methodology will consist of a knowledge synthesis; a case study; a program evaluation; a feasibility study; a needs assessment; or some combination of the above.

Students work with their academic supervisors to ensure their literature review is sufficient and that the Norwegian Centre for Research Data has been notified of any personal data processing included in the project plan.

Students undertake largely independent research, ideally on site with the host, and complete a final written report.

The Applied Research Project sharpens students' research skills. Teaching methods

The course contains no lectures or seminars, but students gain knowledge through meetings with the course instructor and their academic and host supervisors, and through feedback on their draft reports.

The course is offered in an extended spring semester.

Assessment

The exam will consist of a research project report of approximately 4,000 words.

  • The report should include content from the research proposal and the literature review completed as a final assignment for the "GENI Research Methods and Indigenous Research Ethics" course. New material should therefore make up only about half of the final report (approximately 2000 words).
  • The final submission should address comments and suggestions made by academic and host supervisors to the draft, submitted as part of the obligatory course work.

The applied grading of the report is passed or failed

Retake is offered in in the beginning of the following semester in cases of grade F or Fail. Deferred examination is offered in the beginning of the following semester if the student is unable to take the final exam due to illness or other exceptional circumstances. Registration deadline for retake is August 15.
