Aqua NOR in Trondheim has been an important international venue for the aquaculture industry since 1979 and its last edition (20-23 August, 2019) attracted over 28,000 visitors from 74 countries. The NTNU Brohode Aquaculture 2050 project led by Alexandra Neyts at NTNU and the Nor-Fishing Foundation in partnership with NTNU Ocean Club, Trondheim Municipality, Study Trondheim, and Seafood Norway organized a Students’ Day on the last day of the fair, on Friday 23 August. The goal of the meeting was to present some of the industry needs in terms of expertise, new fields of activities and inspire the young generations in the aquaculture sector. On this occasion, BSc and MSc students from NTNU, NMBU, Nord University and UiT The Arctic University of Norway presented their research projects to a large audience of exhibitors and students.

UiT was represented by MSc Bamidele Theophilus Opeifa who recently completed a thesis on cryopreservation of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) sperm under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Peruzzi (BFE, AMB) and Dr. Marianne Frantzen (Akvaplan Niva, Tromsø). The use of cleaner fish as a biological control for sea lice infections in Atlantic salmon farming has been growing steadily in last few years with lumpfish being the preferred species for activities taking place in northern locations. Despite the interest, some bottlenecks need to be solved to allow a reliable and commercially sustainable year-round production of lumpfish juveniles, notably in terms of broodstock management and availability of gametes. The Master project of Bamidele focused on the establishment of a protocol for cryopreservation of lumpfish sperm using large volume straws that could be suitable under commercial settings.
