Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

Omega-3 fatty acids of marine origin (n-3 PUFAs) have beneficial effects on the hemostatic system. Yet, the effect on the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the population is disputed, at least in part because the assessment of n-3 PUFAs intake over time is challenging. We used comprehensive dietary data from the 4th survey of the Tromsø Study and accounted for changes in the diet in the subsequent 6th survey and calculated the total intake of n-3 PUFAs of marine origin.

First, we found that an intake of n-3 PUFAs exceeding 4.7 grams per week was associated with a 22-26% lower risk of VTE. Higher intake did not add to the effect, and this apparent threshold effect was larger for pulmonary embolism (31-47% reduced risk) than for deep vein thrombosis. In the second study, we observed a slight reduced risk of recurrent VTE in those with a high compared to a low intake of n-3 PUFAs. Finally, we found a reduced risk of having a surgery as a trigging event in VTE patients with a high compared to those with a low n-3 PUFAs intake (Odds Ratio: 4.1 vs. 11.8).

Our findings may suggest that a high dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs protect against incident and recurrent VTE along with surgery-related VTE in the general population.
