Short abstract:

Márkomeannu Festival (Gállogieddi) has proved crucial in the valorization of the local Márka-Sámi intangible cultural heritage, a process that started long before the festival itself. Like other local cultural institutions, Márkomeannu is inscribed in the wake of Sámi struggle for recognition and epitomizes local indigenous efflorescence. In this context, art as a means of ethno-political expression emerges as preponderant and as such has a privileged site in Márkomeannu. Drawing on the 2018 edition of Márkomeannu, and looking at it through the lens of Indigenous Efflorescence, Erika will analyse this festival’s ideological premises and its decolonial overtones from a diachronic perspective. Her analysis will focus on the 2018/2118 festival’s dystopian narrative and its material counterparts. Furthermore, she will address the Festival’s linguistic landscape and its role in shaping local perceptions concerning Sámi languages and identities.
