Meet our new international students in Tromsø

Last week around 100 new international exchange students arrived in Tromsø. A great team of volunteers helped them to find their way through semester start, campus and town. Staff of the Student Councelling Centre, The International Office and the Faculties informed about all topics relevant for the newcomers to UiT and Norway. Get accqainted with some of them and their first impressions of UiT and Tromsø.

- People are open and friendly here, says Fay from The Neatherlands. She is excited to explore Norwegian nature and the outdoors. She looks forward to study Ecology and Ocean Climate. UiT has an exchange agreement in Biology with her home university in Wageningen.
Yunfeng is the only Chinese exchange student this semester. He studies Biology at the Northern Arctic Federal University (NARFU) in Arkhangelsk, Russia.
- Wow, the Polar Lights! This is really different from Oslo. I wanted definitely to go to Tromsø. I learned about UiT from my Norwegian roommate at NARFU. He is from here. Great Student App you have here - UiT Hugin. I like that. I live in student housing on Kvaløya. It's beautiful there!
Auguste from the University of Vilnius, Lithuania, speaks already fluently Norwegian. - I chose Tromsø also because I am especially interested in Kvensk language and culture. The exchange is a great opportunity to speak as much Norwegian as possible and learn at the same time more about a Northern minority language.
- I study Engineering and Electricty at home, the Northern Eastern Federal University in Jakutsk. For me the weather here is warm compared to our winter temperatures around -30/-40, says Andrei. - My first impression: UiT has very progressive IT systems, the services are top. But the bus system seems to need improvement: From my student housing to campus there is a bus only every 30 min. This is a very long waiting time, compared with what I am used to.
- I learned about the possibility of an EEA scholarship to Tromsø from a friend of mine. These first days have been very intense. I have met some new amazing people already. I study English Literature, but want to learn Norwegian in addition. It's a bit cold, but Tromsø is a beautiful city, says Adam from Hungary.
