Title: " Resource Allocation Auctions in Decentralized Systems with Untrused Users "

Abstract
In decentralized systems, nodes often need to coordinate to access shared resources in a fair manner. One approach to perform such arbitration is to rely on auction mechanisms. Although there is an extensive literature that studies auctions, most of these works assume the existence of a central, trusted auctioneer. Unfortunately, in fully decentralized systems, where the nodes that need to cooperate operate under separate spheres of control, such central trusted entity may not exist. Notable examples of such decentralized systems include community networks, clouds of clouds, cooperative nano data centers, among others. In this talk, we present our theoretical and practical contributions to distribute the role of the auctioneer. From the theoretical perspective, we propose a framework of distributed simulations of the auctioneer that are Nash equilibria resilient to coalitions and asynchrony. From the practical perspective, our protocols leverage the distributed nature of the simulations to parallelise the execution. We have implemented a prototype that instantiates the framework for bandwidth allocation in community networks, and evaluated it in a real distributed setting. 

Bio
Amin M Khan is a Software Engineer at Pentaho, part of Hitachi, working on Big Data Security features of Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics platform. He recently completed his Ph.D in Distributed Computing from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, BarcelonaTech and INESC-ID, IST, Universidade de Lisboa in 2016. His research interests include distributed systems, cloud computing, big data, mechanism design, and machine learning.

Amin has over ten years of experience working on research projects and enterprise applications in academia and industry. Previously, he has been teaching at Iqra University, Islamabad, as Assistant Professor in 2011-12. He has published various articles in international refereed journals and conferences. He received his Masters degree in Informatics from University of Edinburgh and University of Trento in 2007. He graduated in Computer Software Engineering from National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan in 2004.  

Among his notable achievements, he has been awarded the Honour of Distinction by the President of Pakistan, the Award for Academic Excellence by Government of the Punjab, and Eramsus Mundus scholarship twice by the European Commission. He also won the best paper award at IEEE AINA 2014. He is a member of ACM, IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, Internet Society Pakistan Chapter, and Pakistan Engineering Council.
