Title: SME - HW Development for Computer Scientists
Lecturer: Professor Brian Vinter, Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

Abstract
Today computational power is primarily achieved through the use of graphics processors. However, the limited domain of vectorizable applications and the power profile of GPPGUs new approaches are needed to further increase computational power. The most promising technology for this at the moment is Field Programmable Gate Arrays, FPGAs. FPGA’s offer much better bandwidth and compute-power than the largest GPGPUs, but the price one must pay is that they do not implement a Von Neumann machine. This talk will introduce a programming paradigm for FPGAs that targets trained software programmers, and will show how leaving the Von Neumann approach can indeed increase performance.
