Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN) grant awarded

Starting in 2019 the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks consortium grant “Polynomial Optimization, Efficiency through Moments and Algebra” (POEMA)  will explore methods from mathematical optimisation which can be used to model real world applications.

 Polynomial optimization is  a kind  of optimization problems which are, for example, studied by the Algebra group at UiT. Such mathematical optimization problems have been successfully applied to diverse areas like machine learning, finance, data science, and the study of networks, to name but a few. The Algebra group and in particular the SymRAG project, which is financed by Tromsø Research foundation,  are partners in this European network which  involves a total of fourteen partner institutions from science and industry such as, for example IBM research.

The consortium of scientists will be funded with approximately 40 MNOK from  the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions programme of the European Union for a period of four years starting in 2019 and ending in 2023 and will investigating the development of new algebraic and geometric methods combined with computer algebra techniques for global non-linear optimization problems. Their applications are, in particularly, in smarter cities challenges, urban traffic management, water network management, energy flow control, or environmental monitoring. UiT is expected to receive about 3 MNOK.

-This network provides a great opportunity for our research group, says Cordian Riener, who is the local representative of the project, as it allows us to intensify our research connections with the  project partners in other universities. Furthermore, the Ph.D. positions in the project which will include also funding for research stays at other locations of the project provide a great opportunity to train the next generation of researchers in our field.
