Research interests

Based on diploma and doctoral studies in experimental atomic physics and space physics, my research interests developed toward space and astrophysics and in particular the physics of the heliosphere, cosmic dust and dusty plasmas, physical processes in the interstellar medium, the interplanetary medium and circum-stellar systems; I also carry out research related to the evolution of small bodies, meteors, meteoroids and dust in the solar system and in extra-solar planetary systems. Motivated by new discoveries I got interested in cosmic nanodust and its dusty plasma phenomena. Through studies of the light scattering at irregular particles and through the meteor phenomena I became interested in atmospheric physics and the complex interactions of the polar atmosphere at all altitudes.

Biographical data

I received a Diploma and a PhD in Physics from Ruhr University in Bochum and a Habilitation at Braunschweig Technical University in Germany. I have worked at universities, basic research institutions and space centres in Europe, Japan and the USA including: the Belgium Institute for Space Aeronomy, Kobe University in Japan, Münster University in Germany, ESA Space Science Department, the Earth and Planetary Sciences Division at Caltech, Paris Observatory and the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy and moved to UiT from the position of Head of Projects at EISCAT Scientific Association.

I am involved in the project EISCAT_3D a new advanced ionospheric radar system to study how the Earth atmosphere is coupled to space. The project involves scientists in Europe, Japan and China and is on the European Commissions ESFRI roadmap for research infrastructures. At present I am the leader of EISCAT_3D Norway 2014, the project of the national EISCAT_3D consortium.
