Our core activity is research, education and dissemination within a broad spectre of disciplines related to literature, culture, art, media and documentation studies. With its multilingual competence (English, Finish, Kven, French, Scandinavian, Russian, Sami, Spanish and German), the Department conducts research, teaching, and dissemination concerning national and transnational cultural canons as well as other modern cultural expressions.


The Department has approximately 35 permanent employees. Additionally, there are approximately 12 research fellows, and 10 employees in temporary appointments such as researcher or adjunct professor.
