The Department of Information Technology (ITA) should be an active partner for all research institutes at UiT, and help them in achieving their goals more quickly and with greater precision. IT will be perceived as a competitive advantage for research communities within institutes and businesses that want to collaborate with the University of Tromsø.
"The Department of Information Technology make staff and students at UiT - the Arctic university of Norway, to the best in leveraging IT in education, research and dissemination"
The Section for Digital Research Services is responsible for IT services for research activities at UiT, and has the technical and professional ownership for a variety of digital research services at UiT. The section is responsible for developing and managing research services by providing support, making available scientific applications, computational resources and storage services available, and providing counseling and project support for research projects.
UiT has several outstanding researchers who need powerful computing resources, developer expertise and advanced support. ITA has since 2000 established a national operations center for supercomputing with high status outside their own organization. Establishment of new services for users with "normal desktop" needs are next.
Management of research data in a safe and functional manner is an important area. This applies both to prevent the loss of important data, and protection against sensitive information falling into the wrong hands. Research data at UiT shall be stored in solutions that are supported by ITA. By building on the experience of existing solutions and through interaction with external actors can UiT take a national leadership role in selected areas.
