UiT has maintained a long-term research and education collaboration with institutions in Georgia, located in the Caucasus region. In 2014, we began working on the design of a national digital birth registry in Georgia, in collaboration with UNICEF and the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) in Georgia. The registry was launched in January 2016 and has, to date, recorded over 400,000 pregnancies and births. Since 2017, PhD and master’s students have utilized data from health registries in Georgia for their theses. Until now, there are 3 completed PhD theses, 3 ongoing PhD projects, and over ten master’s projects in Georgia and Norway. The research topics are not limited to the birth registry; students are also working on subjects such as cancer, hepatitis C, and lead contamination.
