Examinations and measurements

All the invited subjects were given information about the study. A questionnaire (4 pages) was mailed together with the invitation. The questionnaire included questions about general health status, diseases and diseases in the family, muscle pain, physical discomfort and mental distress, use of the public health service and medications, socioeconomic situation, physical activity in leisure time, smoking and alchol habits as well as food habits. Women were asked about, among other topics, parity, age at menarche and age at menopause. People who attended the study received another very comprehensive  questionnaire that they were asked to complete and send back.

Everyone who attended underwent a relatively simple medical examination comprising measuring height, weight, waist and hip circumference and blood pressure. A blood sample was also taken to measure serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose.

All individuals who had taken part in the special study in Tromsø4, who were aged 50-62 or 75-84 as well as a 20 % random sample of subjects aged 63-74 were invited to a more comprehensive examionation in the same way as in the Tromsø4 and Tromsø5 surveys.
