Filmen "The Islands and the Whales"

Vi inviterer til Polart Vin&Viten på Verdensteateret med visning av filmen "The Islands and the Whales", med innledning av Ann Eileen Lennert, UiT. Inngang til vanlig billettpris på Verdensteateret. Velkommen!

Regissør er skotske Mike Day.

The award-winning documentary feature The Islands and the Whales raises the important question of how the pollution of the sea affects marine animal life, but also of what direct effects marine pollution has on the local community – and fundamentally on all of us who live by and from the sea.

The Islands and the Whales (Denmark/UK) was released last year and has since then earned positive reviews from screenings on international film festivals. It is directed by Scottish Mike Day.

The film was shown on BIFF 2017:
«Ever since the Faroe Islands were first settled in the 9th century, seabirds and pilot whales have been a staple of the local diet and an absolute necessity for survival. In this extraordinarily beautifully shot documentary film maker Mike Day portrays this traditional way of life at a time when pollution threatens to decimate the population of birds and poison the meat of the whales. Both picturesque and deeply humanistic, THE ISLANDS AND THE WHALES offers a charming and insightful glimpse of life in one of the lesser-known Nordic countries.»

Introductory speaker Ann Eileen Lennert recently defended her doctoral dissertation at Ilsimatursarfik, University of Greenland. Her research deals with climate and environmental changes in the Godthåbsfjord, West Greenland, and shows how these changes can be better understood by combining traditional local knowledge and historical data with recent natural scientific methodology. Lennert is currently a researcher of arctic and marine biology at UiT – the Arctic University of Norway, and runs the website Arctic Sustainability Lab.
