Currently, the negative impact of eating, drinking and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) on health and wellbeing of people with lifelong disability is poorly recognised in Scandinavia. Dysphagia and/or choking is the second highest cause of preventable death in people with lifelong disability.
The DDS workshop is suitable for those experienced in working in lifelong disability (e.g., SLTs), the other two are suitable for a general audience including SLTs. These workshops will equip participants to understand, assess and manage dysphagia and assess the risk of choking and pneumonia in people with lifelong disability.
UiT The Artic University of Norway, Tromsø, is proud to host Professor Susan Balandin from Deakin University, Australia who will conduct three workshops on dysphagia, choking and management of swallowing disorders from 26. – 28. October 2018.
Participants will learn to use a range of assessments that will certify them to use the following screening and assessment tools validated as suitable for use with people with lifelong disability aged 18 months to adulthood:

In this workshop we will discuss the development of mature eating and drinking skills from a motor learning perspective. This will include maximising eating independence and achieving satisfactory outcomes for nutrition, respiratory health and wellbeing for young children through to older people with lifelong disability. Forms for analyzing case presentations will be provided.
In this workshop the focus will be on swallowing, eating and drinking as they relate to cerebral palsy, including how good and bad mealtime habits develop. There will be opportunities to anlayse videotaped case studies and to discuss participants’ own experiences.
Professor Susan Balandin holds the Inaugural Chair of Disability and Inclusion at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. A clinician for more than 20 years prior to becoming an academic, she is a Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist, a Fellow of Speech Pathology Australia, and a Fellow of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC). Susan’s research and clinical interests centre on adults with lifelong disability, dysphagia, inclusion, augmentative and alternative communication. Trained by Professor Joan Sheppard to deliver the Dysphagia Disorders Survey and Dysphagia Management Staging Scale, she is a certified trainer and regularly delivers workshops dysphagia workshops in Australia and India. She has conducted research in dysphagia and adults with lifelong disability in Australia, India, the US and Scandinavia and has published in this area.
